Quick question about Chaos Lords.
« on: June 19, 2009, 03:06:30 PM »
Alright, so I was toolin through the Chaos Codex  when I noticed something that struck me as odd and just wanted to make sure I was lookin at things right.

Under the entry for Chaos Lord it says that while wearing Power Armour the Lord may replace his Close Combat weapon with a PAIR of Lightning Claws.  This implies that he may still keep and upgrade his ranged weapon.

Every other time I've seen Paired Lightning Claws mentioned the entry has been specific that the models drops BOTH CC AND RANGED weapons for BOTH claws.

Additionally, the Lords entry mentioned all this near the beginning of his wargear options whereas the others I have seen mention this pairing at the end.  This suggests to me that noting this CC option at the end is significant for Termies and others.

So can I really have my Lord kitted out as such:

Lord - Paired Claws AND Bolt Pistol, MoK, Jump Pack...?  (All at the somewhat hefty price of 150 pnts.)

And really, is it worth it?  I understand the Bolt Pistol will probably never see service but I hate to give up any scrap of advantage I can get my greedy little paws on...  Also, it sounds cool as a concept, but whats my cost benefits analysis like?

Hm, interesting... I'd probably say this is just an oversight on GW's part, I don't believe you should really be able to keep a ranged weapon as well as use two lightning claws. Physically it's impossible, but we've seen plenty of other examples of combo's like that too :P

Tactical advantage would be minimal, in my opinion. If your Lord has Lightning Claws, you want him in combat, not shooting. I s'pose you could give him a combi-bolter too, to get an extra flamer or melta shot in there if you feel you might need it; but that's probably all I'd recommend. And again, I'm not too convinced you should be able to do it anyways, though according to the book you *technically* can.

Going by the Dark Angels FAQ (of all things), it's allowed as long as all options taken are completely modelled on your Chaos Lord.

Although, given that you're in Japan now, I suppose that's entirely legit. :shifty:

Masked Thespian's correct that you need to add the gun to the model if you're to use it (technically this is true, but only in WYSIWYG games)
A little converting and there could be a bolter held in a lightning claw :)

Maybe the bolter is mounted on the claw, similar to Abbadon's, that could work
Well, modelling-wise anyway, without it looking too cheesy.

Actually I remember back when the codex first came out there was a discussion on this, lemme go see if I can dig it up, I think that the consensus was that you could do it.
*went back all the way till I saw last codex stuff but couldn't find it, im sure if you took some more time than i did you'd find it*

You can do it and you don't technically need to model the bolt pistol (as it's basic equipment on the lord).

Yeah, I think all books since DA can do things like that, but I'm to lazy to go check, either way we can do it

I had an idea concerning this as well which may not be tournament legal but would be super cool.

Give the Lord a Plasma Pistol and model green stuff around his eyes and mouth to make it look like he's actually spewing bolts of plasma energy. You've got your pistol and a sweet looking model that is devastating in close combat.

Sounds like an awesome conversion; you planning on doing one?

Yeah actually, I was probably going to use the lord with the jump pack and go from there seeing as how I don't know of any plastic kits that would provide me with the proper weapons.
