I disagree. I would not charge a unit of bloodletters with XV8s, but I'd flame them any day. Same goes for a unit of boyz with a powerclaw wielding nob, harlequins, genestealers, or any other unit that is fairly squishy to massed flamer wounds, but that has rending/power weapons/fists.
If you flamed them down to one or two left in the unit go ahead, but otherwise make them come to you and take that extra turn.
The last sentence I said "(after taking a wave of hits of course)". But if there's
just a powerclaw-wielding Nob left (or a few other Boyz), might as well. But if concentration of firepower is utilized properly from the rest of the cadre, there shouldn't be too much left if anything at all. I have killed a 30-strong Hormagaunt swarm along with a Hive Tyrant and Carnifex thanks to charging the Hive Tyrant and Carnifex (kitted for range) with my suits. The gaunts came in after, my Stealthsuits joined in, and the monsters were killed by taking wounds from 'No Retreat'. If I didn't do that charge, the Tyrant and Carnifex would be chowing down on my heavy vehicles.
The Carnifex left the combat with 1 wound remaining and took a Railgun to the face. The rest of his army was demolished because I could take my firepower elsewhere.
Also used twin-linked Flamers against Long Fangs with Lascannons and followed up with a charge, eliminating them through his assault phase and moving across the board to take out a pack of wolves and then contest an objective from three Wolf Guard filled with Meltaguns (and powerfist), which did result in a charge. Most of the time, I'm saving one of my vehicles from getting slagged when I do a charge.
Like the Nob Bikers that took a beating from a Failsafe Detonator, and were shot and charged again to protect my immobilized Hammerhead. To say the least, it worked.
... But then again, getting really close to the enemy is one of my goals with my Tau army, so my situations are entirely different from most Tau players.
