Daemonic assault issue...

this past weekend vs an IG player, i won the first turn in a roll. I told him to set up and he told me I had to deploy first. I explained to him about daemonic assault, and how I deep strike after he deploys. finally i just got fed up and asked one of the ruleboys to sort this out and he said that I technically get a free shooting phase (seeing as i can't assault) then he goes.

I then proceeded to run urksar creed into a chaos spawn  ;D

my issue is this- someone told me of a strategy of that the IG player is right, and i could have deployed half of my troops in his 6" starting area, forcing him into a corner, then just going nomnomnom to anything that entered the area. this also sounds like a sexy option, can it happen?

The Imperial Guard player was completely in the wrong.  Daemonic Assault works exactly how you stated it to work.

If the Daemon player 'sets up' first then they will deploy nothing whilst their opponent deploys everything, and then you Deep Strike in during your first turn.  If the opponent sets up first then they deploy everything, you deploy nothing, and then your opponent gets a first turn with nothing to shoot at or assault before you Deep Strike in in your first turn.

He was also wrong in that he told you that you had to set up first anyway; the rules specifically state that the winner of the roll-off chooses whether to deploy first or second and winning the roll means you are under no compulsion to have to go first (in fact, as a Daemon player myself, I'd usually recommend you go second).

Thanks for the clarification... That game was over in 3 turns with only a lascannon crew up high in terrain unscathed. I got major bragging points for having the chaos spawn that used to be creed kill kell and his entire retinue.
While he was obsessed with shining flashlights at my heavy armor units, 5 12 strong bloodletter squads  wiped them out
