Re: 500 Point Space Marine Mechanised list

Come on guys, I need some feedback :)

Anyway, I've done a bit of re-jigging following a battle against 500pts of the traitor scum (chaos) last Saturday.

HQ

Captain - Bolter & Power Weapon - 115 - some clarification on whether he can swap his bolt pistol for a close combat weapon would be appreciated here.

Tac Squad (5) - Razorback - 130

Predator Tank - None extra - 60

Scout Squad (5) - Bolters, Land Speeder Storm - 125

Land Speeder - Heavy Bolter & Multi-Melta - 70

As you can see there has been a slight change. The two glaring issues I found when battling my friend's Chaos list on Saturday (if you like I can post it up) was that I A) Just didn't throw out enough shots per turn and B) The combat squad with the Captain lacked oomph when CC eventually came (it was unavoidable, I needed to defend the objective, and it was a choice of let them occupy it and try to shoot 'em out, let them charge me, gain extra attacks and die, or charge out and try to beat the klkn out of 'em). I have therefore re-tooled the list to try and iron out these creases whilst still retaining a degree of anti-tank capability (hence the Multi-melta is still there).

What do we think?

The problem with such a low points level is there really isn't that much flexibility with what you can do to a list. At 500pts everything is run very light on upgrades, and due to that there aren't a huge number of things you can do with it.

I would be tempted to change the captain round so it keeps the bolt pistol and power weapon for the extra attack on the charge, and he would be able to shoot and charge.

I'm not sure a predator with just an autocannon will pump out enough shots, it's only 2 more, would something like a land speeder with the extra heavy bolter be more useful as it gets to fire 6 shots for the same price. Admittedly it would be easier to kill but it is more mobile.

Hopefully that at least gives a couple of things for you to consider. :)

I'm iffy on the captain here, in my 500 pointer I've got a barebones libby running around because they can get away with it, captains need those upgrades to be real headknockers (but they are higher caliber headknockers). Looks like this.

Libby -100 Avenger, gate
Tac 1 (10) -170, flamer, missile
Rhino -35
Tac 2 (5) -15, powerweapon
Razorback -40
Land Speeder -50

Captains can swap their bolter/bolt pistol/ccw (start with any combination of the three) for the upgrades. Basically, they get up to two upgrades, and you choose what is swapped. Powerweapon/Bolt pistol is common, though some prefer Combi-weapon/Lightning claw or Relic blade. Barebones preds are alright, though at 500 I try to find the extra points for a whirly (or a typhoon, for a little extra). If you can get ten more points somewhere, I'd take a second speeder like the one you have. Not sure what I'd do against Chaos since you're going all mechanized, but a tac squad full of plasma makes a good firebase at these points. It's rare you'll need something like melta to pop something, and the plasma doubles for light vehicles and heavy infantry.

I would just take this;

Captain; bolt pistol, powersword
5 Marines; powerfist
Razorback;
5 Scouts; bolt pistol and close combat weapons
Storm; multi melta
Predator; sponson heavy bolter

Always take bp + cc weps on scouts like that, shotguns are rubbish. You still shoot your pistol before you charge so your losing one shot for way more than 1 attack in any long combat. If melta bombs are only 5 points for scout sergeants he can afford them.
