A hammerhead. I would definantly get one ASAP. When you do don't commit yourself to either turret just pin it so you can exchange both.

get more fire warriors, too.  6 is the worst possible number to have in a squad (7, 8, and 11 are pretty bad, too).  If you get the kit with the devil fish and 8 fire warriors in it, you can have 2 10 man squads, and one of them can have a ride.

buy the battleforce. it saves you money, which in an expensive hobby is good.
buy a Fire Warrior/Devilfish box set (or a devilfish box. the FW/fish box savers you money in the long run, and gives you more fire warriors ^.^)
buy 2 hammerheads.

Now, you have:

Shas'el (plasma, pod, tracker) 85
this guy has high BS and is more able to use the "fireknife" config that regular suits, who are unreliable.

shas'ui (tl missile pod, flamer) 57
shas'ui (tl missile pod, plasma rifle) 67
these guys primarily exist to hit light-medium armour, and medium troops with the missile pods. regular suits are better off with twin linked weaponry, and their BS is unreliable. the secondary guy has a secondary role to kill high value 3+sv units, like Space marine bikers.

8 Fire Warriors + shas'ui 90
8 Fire Warriors + shas'ui 90
8 Fire Warriors + shas'ui + Devilfish w/decoy launchers175
12 Kroot 84
these guys are your firing line. 2 squads of FWs, backed up by a squad of kroot are quite impressive. consider messing around with this. leave a suit at home, and try out another FW team, or more kroot. kroot exist to infiltrate, counter attack, and as flankers. used right, kroot are amongst the best troops in the game.

Hammerhead w/railgun, twin burst, multi tracker, decoy launchers, target lock 170
Hammerhead w/railgun, SMS, multi tracker, decoy launchers, target lock 180
these two guys are your high end workhorses. and you know why. railguns. they can crack through armour like nothing, and they can chop through squads with ease. the multi tracker allows it to move 12" and fire everything. moving that far means your tank only gets glancing hits in return, and decoy launcers allow the re-rolling of those killing-immobiliesed results. i like target locks as they allow  me to crack open a leman russ at the same time as cutting a swathe through a heavy weapons team.

998 pts.

its a solid list, and very manoeverable. as i said though, swap certain units. you might find 3 suits is too much (i used 3 suits as its what you would have). you might find more fire warriors are better. you might find you dont like hammerheads, so retire one, and try out some broadsides. and so on.

Whats above is really only a starter.

best of luck!

The battleforce is simply an awesome buy, provided you want most everything in it.

But the piece that will probably most change your force is the Hammerhead.

if you're short on cash, get the box with the 8 firewarriors and the devilfish first, then get a hammerhead second...after that, I'd make up my own mind...the mega force is a good deal, but it's a lot of money.

Ouch... this will be slow going until birthday or christmas...

I still stand by the battleforce, it is an EXTREMELY good buy... but you will need to be very patient. You will have to work out what sort of force you want ahead of time, and then build up a small army to around 1000 points to play with, consisting of models other than the battleforce ones.

Do you know what sort of army you want to play with? Are you aware of the different types of Tau armies?

Rapouc:

A few things - do a forum search, and look at the Important topics sticky for starting a tau army threads.. 42 has also written a series of articles on army construction on a budget:
Building a Tau Army - Part 1
Building a Tau Army - Part 2
Building a Tau Army - Part 3
Starting a Tau Army - Part IV

Along with two I have written:
Want to start a Tau Army?
Want to start a Tau army? - Part 2 - A brief look at the different play styles and their associated armies..

Suggestions:
- Battleforce - an excellent starting point, and probably the best value for money boxed set available for any army. Its also a good base army, from which to decide where to go afterwards - mechanized, static, hybrid etc. See the first 'Want to start a Tau army' thread, it deals specifically with starting off with a battleforce.
- Next - save up for a hammerhead - very versatile tanks.. see the threads quoted above.

Might I add, at one point I was in your exact same position - I had a squad of FW and a crisis suit.. then got a battleforce and a 2 hammerheads and now I have a pretty rounded hybrid army.. working my way towards mechanized (need 2 more devilfishes).. And similarly, its taken me a while due to a low budget..

And don't glue in crisis suit weapons :P or hammerhead weapons either.

The list i'm working towards -> the second one here

I agree with mAce. The Battleforce will give you a great core army, which will mesh nicely with what you have. Hammerhead would be a good step from there. A hammerhead would be a solid step from there, and then you can start to mess with Stealth suits, pathfinders, and such.

I did the same thing with my first crisis suit..

If you paint it all separately, you should be able to just press it into place. If not, try some blu-tac or something.

you could always try the magnet approach

buying magnets for all your suits can become expensive, so i just drill two holes in the arm of the suit and glue a piece of copper wire in, then drill two holes in the weapon the same distance apart as the ones in the arm, meaning you can change your suit's weapon configuration with ease. However, your drill bit must be exactly the same size as the wire, otherwise this will not work.

yeh I think mine fit in pretty well but it won't matter too much with my first one I have a plasma rifle , missile pod and multi tracker. Oh and also I have made a small conversion to my battlesuit to make it look more of an HQ unit
here is the link http://secondsphere.org/archive/index.php?topic=11464.0 note you'll have to go down the page a bit to find the good pics.
