Calling All Commanders!
« on: October 26, 2005, 05:13:38 PM »
Due to my inconvenient positioning in this in fanate universe the good missionaries of games workshop are taking there time in delivering my tau codex. So i ask of you good people to post the configs of your tau commanders. YES! A Chance to show off! This will result in me having more of an understanding of what i wish to do with my newly purchased XV8.

Thanks.

I will delete any post containing a commander's stats. Such information is copywrite.

Considering the Tau's massive lack of options, listing their configs will be sufficient.

As a commander, simple is the way to go.  Shas'el fireknife.

He's versatile and pretty cheap.  He doesn't hog the armory either... my commander represents what I would personally take for the battlefield.  I see myself more as a leader and less of a fighter.

its been traditional now for my shas O to carry a Plasma Rifle, Missile pod, Fusion Blaster, and Hard Wired Multitracker.

this setup lets him tag along with other suits and do the same thing they do (4 suits all shooting is better than 3), but he can also single out enemy heroes.... Librarians in terminator armor comes to mind..... that Fusion Blaster is an assassins weapon to marines... since theyre all T4, its insta-kill madness!!

Pre IA 3:  'O w/ MP,PR,SG, HW MT, & HW BF
Post IA 3:  Expensive :  'O in XV-84 w/ MP,PR,SG, HW MT, & HW BF (plus built in Markerlight & Targetlock)
Cheap:  'El in XV-84 w/ MP,SG, Targeting Array, HW MT, & HW BF (plus built in Markerlight & Targetlock)

This way my Commander is doing what a commander should be doing and that is directing his men, and not fighting.  If he has to fight he is carrying the longest range gun that Crisis Suit can carry so he's far enough back that he can't be targetted.

My commander is Shas'O Sac'ea Or'Es Ukos - Commander from Sac'ea, Powerful Spoon.

Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Fusion Blaster - Hard-wired multi-tracker

Very flexible, no bodyguards, he's an IC and untargetable most of the time.

He also spoons other commanders.

Shas'O
-Shield Gennerator
-Fusion Blaster
-Plasma Rifle
-Hard Wired Multi Tracker
Total: 133

Strong and tough this is my personal choice as this fits my style. My commander isnt going to be leading from the rear but will be one of the few far out front. I will also generally have a detatched pair of Drones from a Devilfish or Hammerhead in front of him or a unit of gun drones, also most of my suits tend to stick to his general area. However I do not attatch him to anything. The IC status keeps him relatively safe on his attack. The only gun that gives me a headache is the battle cannon and perhaps the whirlwind. They make my spacing important and the approach a real pain. But otherwise this configuration packs a lot of punch and is very surviveable. My Shas'O has yet to die and has killed more heavy infantry and tanks than the rest of my army... combined. I take this at any points level and for a second commander I am considering the death rain shas'el as he would support this nicely.

You got Shield Generator there twice.  I'm thinking you mean Plasma Rifle?

Frazzler:

Well, here's a little compilation of Commander configurations with descriptions:

http://secondsphere.org/archive/index.php?topic=8485.msg144205#msg144205

Check it out; it's in the stickied Important Topics by the way.

As for me, personally, I field:

Shas'El
-Twinlinked Missile Pods
-Flamer

I field that against virtually everything, as my dedicated anti-transport character. He does it well too.

Shas'El
-Twinlinked Plasma Rifles
-Flamer

I field this against really purist armored armies that I know will be coming close to me quickly. The flamer is backup in case I guessed wrong and meet a lot of scouts, for example.

Cheers!

Shas'el (for point economy)

Twin-Linked Missile Pod (Assault version of the Autocannon twin-linked? I'm in)

Plasma Rifle (kick some Termie hiney)

Hard-Wired Multi-Tracker (What's better than two awesome weapons? Two awesome weapons that both fire in a turn)

People here are pretty smart about their commanders, it seems.  Commanders are efficiently chosen as either O or El, as anyone who takes an O has 50+ points of wargear on him, making the O better than the EL.  I'm glad to see people know what they're doing, and am intrigued by the sheer variety of roles he performs in different lists.

It may be time for me to try out the aggressive O for once.... instead of my cowardly El.  People make a great case both ways, so it's a tough choice at the end of the day.

Or Khaldun you can do what I probably will end up doing and use both. In the end Ill probably end up using this:

Shas'O, FB, PR, SG, HWMT
Shas'el, TL MP, FB, HWMT

I altered the deathrain a little to throw in the fusion blaster, I just love that gun and despite being at the rear lines any deep striking suits are suddenly going to get hurt and any land raiders that try roaring at my lines will face the possibility of being destroyed. Just as an extra backup.

Do you really want an aggressive HQ in the Tau?

Here's why HQ's are both a blessing and a curse, and why taking the cheapest and longest lasting HQ for Tau is probably the best way to go (typically):

They're Independent Characters
This means (A) we cannot be targeted, thus we live longer, and can deal more damage over the course of the game
This also means (B) we cannot score victory points for ourselves
However, this unit still yields victory points to an opponent if it is killed, or if below 50% starting strength

If our HQ is killed, we lose a unit, we get zero points for (and thus are subtracting possible scoring points from the rest of the army) while giving victory points to our opponent from a unit that didn't score to begin with. So, keeping them alive, is a good way to ensure we don't just give away free victory points and instead, use it as a means to deny victory points to our opponent and help our other units to cause the damage we need to earn our victory points.

Cheers!

Because I like painting HQ Crisis suits, I actually have five or six seperate commanders.  For campaign games, I like to use a Fireknife Shas'O.  If I am trying to build a competitive list, I will generally use a Fireknife Shas'el, with twin-linked plasma rifles if I have the points to spare.  Occasionally I play a deep-striking suicide Shas'el with some Fusion Blaster configuration, but only when I am expecting an inordinate number of transports.
