Official Announcements / 2S Improvement Survey
« on: September 12, 2017, 09:29:08 PM »
Hello faithful 2S users.

We're fishing for ideas to make 2S better. :)

Maybe we could make the site faster? More mobile friendly? Notifications straight to your phone or desktop when there are new posts?

Whatever your idea you can submit it on the following survey. I will post a round up of the results of the survey in the next week or so.

NB. If anyone is finding the site to be slow, could you PM me your country and whether you use a fibre, broadband, 4G, 3G, or 2G connection?

Official Announcements / Recent Downtime 11/12th September
« on: September 12, 2017, 09:17:26 PM »
Sorry about the downtime. There was a single point of failure that we were accidentally relying upon as part of our web serving setup. The issue has now been resolved.

I also now have an alarm that should alert me to 2S going down for faster repair times.

News, Rumours and Trading / Roboute Guilliman Inbound
« on: February 04, 2017, 12:00:39 AM »
https://www.warhammer-community.com/2017/02/03/march-for-macragge/

So the Primarchs are no longer Forgeworld only - Ultramarines Primarch Roboute Guilliman is being released in plastic.

IMO the proportions of the Guilliman miniature don't look quite right. He could also be a tad more dynamic in pose. However, I'll look into picking one up as part of my Ultramarines elite units collection.

There's also another couple of miniatures - Fallen Angel Cypher and Grand Master Voldus.

Thoughts?

I've been thinking about having a dedicated combat patrol army for a while now and one of my favourite choices for this is Imperial Guard.

Chimera chassis vehicles and sentinels are available for us in combat patrol, as are the staple of either platoons or veterans (or even penal legions if you are that way inclined).

I've been thinking of a setup along the lines of the following. NB: If these points are off it's because I'm doing them from memory.

Platoon Command Squad - autocannon, vox-caster - 45 points
Shock Troops - autocannon, vox-caster - 65 points
Shock Troops - autocannon, vox-caster - 65 points
Shock Troops - autocannon, grenade launcher - 65 points
Sentinel - armoured - 40 points
Chimera - hull heavy bolter - 55 points
Chimera - pintle heavy stubber - hull heavy bolter - 65 points

Every unit has a weapon with reasonable firepower: the troops provide 4 autocannons; the sentinel and chimeras a triad of multi-lasers; a couple of hull mounted heavy bolters; a heavy stubber; and a grenade launcher. Then there're also 23 lasguns.

You can either keep the shock troops out in the open, preferably behind cover, or can have some of them take up residence in a chimera. Whilst hiding they can still fire their autocannon - this means the chimera would have quite a few shots that can have a go at hurting any unit allowed in combat patrol, and quite a few shots that are great against anything less than MEQ.

The sentinel is mostly there to use up extra points. You may think it better to replace it and the heavy stubber with another shock troop squad. If you then also dropped the grenade launcher on one of the other shock troops squads and one of the vox casters then you can get an autocannon:

Platoon Command Squad - autocannon, vox-caster - 45 points
Shock Troops - autocannon, vox-caster - 65 points
Shock Troops - autocannon - 60 points
Shock Troops - autocannon - 60 points
Shock Troops - autocannon - 60 points
Chimera - hull heavy bolter, turret multilaser - 55 points
Chimera - hull heavy bolter, turret multilaser - 55 points

This provides quite a few shots that can take out any enemy vehicle (max combined armour is 33 in combat patrol, as per 4th ed rule book) and can wound any enemy model.

Again it's a bit lacking against MEQ but that's why you have so many men. If you are facing MEQ then the tactic becomes order a blob squad to First Rank Fire! Second Rank Fire!.

Another alternative approach is to take the PCS and two shock troops w/ AC & Vox and then go for a couple of armoured sentinels and then add a unit with plasma weapons - perhaps a plasma veteran squad (on foot, or sell a sentinel to buy a chimera transport) or even some rough riders (can rapidly move into place and fire the high strength/low AP plasma weapons at the target).

C&C welcome.

News, Rumours and Trading / Various miniatures for sale
« on: April 06, 2016, 05:18:51 PM »
I'm doing a bit of a clearout and have quite a few miniatures that I could do with moving on (to make room for different miniatures).

I'm not including a comprehensive list with images & equipment of what there is because it'd take quite a while to count every last model so I am including an approximate list - if there's anything that sounds interesting just shout out and I'll get more information/photos of the item(s) in question.

40k:
  • Most of two sets of Space Hulk Stealers (removed from sprue, not glued)
  • 20 classic plastic grots
  • 2 plastic killa kans (one assembled except for ranged weapon, other on sprue. Grot launcher not included)
  • 5 assembled stormboyz
  • 6+ Eldar Rangers (5 metal, painted; 1 finecast, unpainted)
  • 5 painted dire avengers
  • 6 fire dragons (glued except for Exarch)
  • Finecast Avatar (glued, no sword end or finger on other hand, got a little paint on it)
  • 6 swooping hawks (finecast, most broken off of base)
  • 2 Eldar bikes, no pilot
  • 3 falcon grav tanks with bright lance and pulse laser and underslung shuriken cannon, painted. Canopes glued. The pointy bits on the back of the turret are both missing on one model and one is missing on a 2nd model.
  • Eldar heavy support weapon platform
  • 2 Eldar guardian weapon platforms
  • Ork Trukk
  • War Walker, quite fragile assembly
  • Numerous bolter marines (name the number you're interested in and I'll try and find that many)
WHFB:
  • 20 night gobbos w/ bows
  • 35 or so night gobbows w/spears
  • ~8 goblin spiders
  • 10 dire wolves, one or two without base
  • Painted Goblin troll (starter set one)
  • Spear chukka
  • Night goblin slingshot type thrower (throws goblins with wings)
  • 15 Chaos Knights
  • 23 Warriors of Chaos
  • 10 Marauder Horsemen
  • 1 Nurgle Sorcerer
  • 10 plagubearers (metal)
  • 20 bloodletters (half on round bases)
  • Khorne Lord on Jugger (metal)
  • Orc Boar chariot (one orc with spear onboard)
LOTR:
  • Assorted metal models (quite a supply - no idea what they are)
  • Assorted plastic models (as above)
All items shipping from the UK by Royal Mail or Parcelforce. Any requests for photos before the 15th will be sorted quickly - after that they may take a while as I'm away for a couple of months. Dispatch will still be possible on items that have already had photos requested (I'll make sure they're bagged up and I'll get family to send them).

Payment would be via Paypal, cheque (dispatch after clearance in case of cheque) or UK postal order.

No reasonable offers refused.

We all know anniversaries have a very good use: making money. So here we have a new space marine miniature to buy to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Games Workshop Space Marine.

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Imperial-Space-Marine-2016

I doubt it'll be as popular as the 25th anniversary figure - at least it came with a scenic base and didn't have a beak helmet.

GW stores are offering a variety of in store events on the 16th and 17th of this month. Apparently there may actually be the odd freebie but take that with a pinch of salt.

Official Announcements / Second Sphere Transfers and Donations
« on: October 26, 2015, 06:30:24 PM »
Second Sphere and Sorck are now partnering to bring you some waterslide transfers and the ability to directly fund future 2S competitions or contribute towards site upkeep.

NB:
  • International orders will not be accepted for a few weeks... Sorck needs to learn how to fill out the customs form first.
  • Please include your 2S user ID in the order comments - we may send dispatch notices via PM, e-mail and/or PayPal.
  • We have no idea how well the system works and informs us of orders. To that end it'd be great if you could PM @Sorck when you place an order.

First, here are the all new transfers:

We are selling 4 different sets to start with
NameProduct IDPriceTotal Transfers
2S Transfer SetTN 2S 01 M6£560
65 Lightning Bolt Transfer SetTN SP 02 M6£565
Teardrop Transfer SetTN SP 01 M7£560
99 Multi-Coloured IconsTN GS 01 M4£899

Please note that all transfers come with the number of stated coloured transfers and the same number again that are white. The white ones are backing transfers. If you are applying transfers to a non white surface then you must first place the backing transfer on the model else you will experience a colour bleed issue.

When applying transfers we recommend that you cut the transfer as closely as possible to the pigment using fine scissors or a sharp knife (be careful not to cut yourself). Make sure to clean the surface you are applying to and, if possible, apply Micro Sol to the area. You then soak the transfer in water (non-flowing) for 15s. Use tweezers to move the transfer (backing paper attached) onto a piece of tissue paper or a sponge in order to remove some excess moisture. Now use the tweezers to place the transfer on the model and remove the backing paper. You can use a clean brush and Micro Sol to flatten the transfer and make it conform to the surface. You may now repeat this procedure if you wish to add a coloured transfer on top of your white base transfer. Once this is finished and fully dry (wait at least an hour) you may apply Micro Satin as a varnish.

NOTE: We have only tested the transfers with the Microscale Industries products Micro Sol and Micro Satin. Results using other products or companies may vary. We are in no way affiliated with Microscale Industries.

Donate to 2S
And of course we have also introduced the ability for you to donate to 2S.

Donations of 2S transfer sets are cheaper than buying a set for yourself and, best of all, they include free UK postage of the item. If you add a general contests donation at the same time then we may use this, if needed, to fund international postage of donated items.

Hobby / Ice Basing
« on: January 20, 2015, 06:47:35 PM »
I need some method of creating effective looking ice for bases. Or maybe creating a slushy effect. Or both. Snow alone doesn't look very good IMO. :P

News, Rumours and Trading / Small Format Codices
« on: December 01, 2014, 12:29:39 AM »
Well GW are doing miniature versions of the codices at a similar size to the mini rulebooks.

They contain exactly the same content just on a smaller scale. Unfortunately they don't represent a huge saving - they're £5 less than the full version it seems.

The date of release isn't mentioned on their site, though it does say that they are for pre-order (only an inch from where it says that it ships within 24 hours :P).

I know it's not the most exciting of news but it looks like GW is moving to having a greater variety of base sizes  - we are going to see a 32mm base size. It's being introduced in Shield of Baal: Deathstorm for the Death Company. The fex also comes with a 105mm oval base and the broodlord a 75mm oval base - I'm not sure if these are currently standard bases or not, the former might be the Trygon base?

There's also a 32mm base pack on GW's website, though if you click on it it throws up an error. The Death Company is no longer possible to find by itself, either. Though the sets containing it are still around. Fex's are still on the website with the usual base (at least that's the case on the pictures).

And , more interestingly, Shield of Baal: Deathstorm is up for preorder. By the time most people read this it will have been withdrawn from sale I would think as it's a limited release. It's £75 and contains 3 Tyranid warriors, 1 Carnifex, 8 stealers, 1 special edition Broodlord plus a terminator captain, 5 terminators, 5 death company and a death company dreadnought. If that wasn't enough then it also contains a copy of the rules (special BA cover) and a campaign booklet with rules for all of the models contained in the box.

So the set looks to be pretty good value (the nids alone would cost more than the box set to buy separately, taking the cost of the normal broodlord).

Enemies of the Imperium / Ork Mek Gun Rules?
« on: October 27, 2014, 04:54:42 PM »
Hello everyone. :)

I was wondering if anyone knew where the rules for this unit can be found? I looked in the current Ork codex and couldn't find it. Was it included in WD at some point or in another book? It looks like a good unit for my mek-lead Ork/Grot army though I'd rather have the rules to use it as well.

Thanks,
Sorck.

General 40k and Expansions / List of all unit types?
« on: September 17, 2014, 01:00:01 PM »
I'm trying to get a list of all 40k unit types that exist in the game these days for the army list editor. I seem to remember there being new ones in the new rulebook but I've not actually got a copy to get the types from. :P

So far the list has: (not in order)
infantry
jump infantry
walker
monstrous creature
beast
vehicle
skimmer
tank
fast vehicle
fast skimmer
fast tank
bike
jetbike

Are there others?
Also, are "tank", "fast" and "skimmer" more like a special rule addon rather than actually being a distinct unit type?

Thanks in advance,
Sorck

Well I'm going to try and catalogue what I do as part of this project here... it doesn't normally work out but hey, I can try again and one day I may succeed. :P

This time around the Army List Editor (henceforth ALE) will not do much talking with the 2S servers. In fact, it's being designed so it doesn't need a remote server at all - i.e. so you can load the editor (download the needed files first) and then you can "open" a file off of your local disk and then also "save" back to your local disk. If you need to then it will offer a method of syncing your army list with the Second Sphere servers. Whether the system will automatically try and sync with 2S, or it will primarily base itself on local files is another story. I'll decide whilst I code...

.ale files
In order to allow the ability to download files we need a file format. I am, rather unimaginatively, going to use the extension .ale for the files produced by the ALE. These files are inspired by the Microsoft OpenXML files... though we're not following their definitions literally. This format should allow a .ale file to also contain extra information such as army definitions. You could also import these files into another application that supported our format.

Army Definitions
When you used the old ALE you would create an army list which would be associated with a given army (say Orks) and you would then be presented with a number of units when you clicked "add unit" e.g. Warboss, Big Mek, Grotsnik etc. These lists could become out of date or may have missed a unit. It was probably annoying if you couldn't add a new unit. Our way of dealing with this is allowing you to create your own "army definitions" which list  properties such as which section of the army the unit belongs to (HQ/Troops/Rare etc), possible unit types (winged, beast, jump infantry etc) and, of course, the unit "title".

Custom Game Systems
Although we will maintain an 'official' 40k and WHFB system, we want you to use our editor for all kinds of lists and rosters. To this end we will allow you to write your own game system definitions - these will include what sections exist in an army (HQ/Elites/Troops/FA/HS for standard 40k old edition), unit types in the game system (infantry, jump infantry, monstrous creature etc) and possibly other information that may be pertinent - suggestions welcome.

To be continued...
I'll finish writing this up when I've had my nap.

Official Announcements / Recent Downtime [July] [Updated]
« on: July 15, 2014, 09:30:22 AM »
Hi all,

2S has been down for a few days due to a problem with our ISP. This is being sorted as we speak and FT is looking at getting a new hosting provider.

In the mean time I have ssphere.sorck.net setup to maintain Second Sphere. It's was a day or two behind the live copy of 2S when it went offline because we'd been experiencing some issues for a number of days.

*This* site will be moved back to secondsphere.org when the main server is available once again so you can post here safe in the knowledge that your post content will not be lost. Avatars uploaded will also be transferred over and any previously lost avatars will return as well once we get back to the main server (FT has the avatar backups of these so will be getting them up later on).

Thank you for your time,
-Second Sphere Admin Team
