No apparent release date on the normal one.

I think I read somewhere that it was September 9th, but I could be wrong.

Bell Of Lost Souls is suggesting that there are going to be two editions of Dark Vengeance coming out; a regular one and a Special Edition one.  The only difference seems to be $8 US and a single miniature; a Dark Angels Interrogator Chaplain.  Would we be getting that?  If so, who wants it?

House Rules / Re: [Blood Bowl] New Teams!
« on: August 19, 2012, 02:15:52 PM »
Yeah.  I came across it a couple of years ago when I was trying to write a house ruled version of Blood Bowl 40,000, which was basically DungeonBowl with 40k races.

Note that the formula doesn't exactly match up with the existing teams in the regular book; those were playtested and amended accordingly.  Likewise, with rules amendments since the original release of 3rd Edition back in the early 90's, I'm not sure how well it corresponds these days.

But anyways, here's the formula in case you want to use it:

  Jervis Johnson's
PLAYER COST FORMULA

Starting Value

    All models start with 5 points, to which is added the following:

Movement

    MA 1 = -5
    MA 2 = -4
    MA 3 = -3
    MA 4 = -2
    MA 5 = -1
    MA 6 = 0
    MA 7 = +2
    MA 8 = +3
    MA 9 = +4
    MA 10 = +5
    MA 11 = +6

Strength

    + ( ( ST - 3 ) x 3 )

    plus a further 3 points if ST > 3
    plus a further 3 points if ST > 6

   Agility

    + ( (AG - 3) x 2 )

Armour Value

    AV 4 = -5
    AV 5 = -4
    AV 6 = -3
    AV 7 = -2
    AV 8 = 0
    AV 9 = +1
    AV 10 = +3
    AV 11 = +5
    AV 12 = +7

Skills & Things

    +2 per skill/mutation/etc.
    -2 per neg. racial ability (not Big Guy)

Value in gold pieces: After calculating the 'points' of a player you can convert it into the actual value in gold pieces. Every point counts as a value of 10,000 gp, with the exception that all points over 10 count as 5,000 gp each.

For example: A player has MA 8, ST 3, AG 4, AV 7, Block, Dodge, Leap. The player starts with 5 points, adding 3 points for MA 8 (5+3=8), adding 2 points for AG 4 (8+2=10), subtracting 2 points for AV 7 (10-2=8); then adding 6 points for three skills (8+6=14), leaving the player with 14 points. 14 points results in a value of (10x10,000 gp + 4x5,000 gp) 120,000 gp.

If neither of you really wanted it, would you be willing to send the rulebook to me out in Japan?  For a proportional fee, of course.

Have you costed these using the old Blood Bowl costing formula or just by eye?

And the winners are:

Congrats to all of our winners.  Seals, Contest Points, Karma Points (for all entrants), and Dice will be sent out whenever Thantos gets back from his trip to the hills.

Okay guys; you've got a little under 24 hours to vote if you haven't done so already!

So if your opponent can't decline if he has one character.

IN.  RANGE.  Sorry, but I've got to spell it out to you since you don't seem to be acknowledging it.  Melee combats in 6th edition are going to be more spread out.  Gone are the days of a 6" assault and a 6" pile in from the other side.  If a unit has a large enough footprint then the 3" pile in moves every turn are not going to get that Commissar into range any time soon and you have to bear in mind that until you can get your claws on him you are going to be stuck in there, potentially getting whittled down.

If you can attack from more than one side then you've got a much better chance of getting to him.  Even with Precision Strikes, the target has to be in range so you can't even get him with a lucky 6 if he's on the other side of the squad.

Sending a single model into a blob squad just seems like an utter waste of points.  You've got to coordinate your attack.

@ MT I looked but it seems to challenge there is no range to it. I challenge and if they not in base contact my opponent places his model in base to fight the challenge.

Correct.  There is no range.  BUT, read the paragraph "Accepting a Challenge" on page 64 of the rulebook, particularly the line, "Characters that cannot fight or strike blows (including those that are not engaged with an enemy model) cannot accept challenges."  Likewise, in the very next paragraph, it says, "If you refuse, your opponent gets to nominate one of your characters from those who could have accepted.  The chosen model...". The Commissar may NOT accept a challenge if he is not in base contact with an enemy (nor within 3" of a friendly, engaged model at the start of the combat) NOR may he be retired as a result.  As long as the Commissar is not in base contact (or equivalent), he cannot be challenged, so you will get tarpitted.

When the opponent takes a challenge it doesn't matter who I call he can select the char he likes to accept. My problem is when he decline a challenge. The way it reads the model I choose for the fight won't participate and I have full choice on who I want to target due to him declining. That is why I said I will declare a sargent and if he declines I will go for the commissar.

It doesn't work like that.  You CANNOT decide whom he has to choose to accept with.  If he declines, THEN you have full choice, from those who could have accepted, to retire one.

Keep in mind that combat resolution is still done by unsaved wounds not by killed models... so if a monsterous creature with a boat load of attacks gets into a challenge, he might kill you 6 or 7 times over and then (because he's all alone in the challenge) not get any wounds back.  Even with rerollable leadership it's going to be hard to stand up to anything when your leadership has been reduced to 4.

There is no overkill in a Challenge; if the Sergeant has 1 wound then the most you will get from killing him, for the purposes of assault results, will be 1.  Check out page 26, "Determine Assault Results", third paragraph, bold sentence.

1/ You cannot challenge specific models.  You choose one of your models to issue a challenge and your opponent chooses to accept or deny it.  If he denies it then YOU get to choose a character model for him to not use in this round of combat, either for Leadership or for attacking.  If he accepts, HE chooses which model accepts.  You cannot "challenge a sergeant and then retire the Commissar" - you can only issue a challenge and it is up to him how to respond.

2/ Characters who are not in range cannot accept a challenge, nor can they be retired as a result of refusing one.  As par page 64, this means that if you can keep your Commissar out of reach, he can't be targeted but can still grant the unit Fearless.  With 51 models in the unit, you could put him right at the back of a 15" blob, which would take 5 player turns for him to pile in to combat (with 5 x 3" pile in moves).

The second point means that, in my opinion, blob squads are going to be very effective, but only if you attack from a single direction.  If you can use some kind of pincer tactics then the Commissar will have nowhere to hide and you can challenge to your heart's content.

Past Contests / Elites Contest [RULES]
« on: August 07, 2012, 05:35:23 PM »
So, I kinda forgot that I needed to get this contest going at the start of the month.   :-[  I'll keep it running an extra week at the end of September to make up for it.

I also kinda had a brainfart and originally wrote this up as the Fast Attack Contest.  But that doesn't start until next month.  Whoops...   :-[  Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up, but in my defence it's 1.30am right now and I really do need to get to bed for work tomorrow.

Here's part 3 of our rebooted Competition Calendar! Check out the thread here for more information on current and upcoming contests!

Wherever the battle is thickest, a commander must choose to commit the most experienced troops at his disposal.  Whether they are extremely skilled, well armed, well armoured, or a combination of all three, they strike swift and true, leaving behind only corpses in their wake.  This contest is open to any Elites choice from a Warhammer 40,000 Codex.

Dates:
  • Entries can be submitted via a PM to Masked Thespian from August 8th until September 31st.
  • Voting will take place between October 1st and October 7th.
  • Winners will be announced on the 8th of October.

Prizes:
1st Place - 10pts
2nd Place - 5pts
3rd Place - 2pts

(The top 3 all receive official 2S winners seals as well).

The winner of this contest will also be able to lay their grubby little mitts on a fantastic shiny set of Custom Second Sphere Dice:

Rules:
  • The unit must be a legal Elites choice in a current edition 40k Codex;
    • Transport options, such as Rhinos or Mycetic Spores, may not be included;
    • Units that "count as" Elites though do not take up any actual slots are allowed in this contest;
  • Up to three pictures of your entry may be submitted;
  • Forgeworld models and Monstrous Creatures are accepted;
  • A caption or title of up to 10 words may be included as part of your entry;
  • Depending on response, entries may be divided by a panel of impartial judges into Master and Novice tiers for the purposes of voting;
  • The models may not have been entered in a previous contest;
    • Contests running at the time of the big crash are not considered to be previous contests for the purpose of this rule;
  • The models must be fully painted;
  • Photos of your entry may not exceed 800x600 pixels;
    • If your photos exceed 800x600 pixels then Contests HQ reserves the right to reduce them to an appropriate size.

Don't forget that our Troops Contest is now in its voting stage; head on over to the Voting Thread and cast your vote if you haven't done so already   ;)

So I take it we aren't expecting the lost posts back then? Ah well, never mind.

Now, now; I didn't say that.  Sorck's just been a little too busy to get things sorted out recently, so there's still a chance we can get them back, but I asked him specifically to help me with this so we could get Competitions back on track a bit quicker.

Okay guys.  Sorry about the delay.  I've had to redo the whole Voting Thread post due to our mini crash and, thanks to Sorck, I've managed to salvage the photos of the later entries (since the mini crash wiped out my PMs from that period too).

Since I've redone the thread, if you voted before then you will have to vote again (if you want to).  You'll all have 7 days from the moment I make this post, due to the delay.

So, without further ado, here is the Troops Contest Voting Thread.  Please vote for your number one choice and may the best entry win!
