Close Calls and Narrow Victories

Greetings all,

Played a 1,000 point game yesterday at my LGS and, despite what I would call the worst 2 turns I've ever had with my Tau, managed to score a last second win.  Given how close my game was yesterday, I'd like to know if there are any other good stories of close calls / narrow victories (either your's or your opponents')?

I'll summarize my game to start.  The mission was Big Guns Never Tire w/ Dawn of War deployment.  Opponent: Necrons w/ IG allies.  I deployed first, setting up massive fire lanes with two Broadside Monats; each holding an objective in a separate corner of my deployment zone.  I kept my force divided to the far corners, with my Riptide holding the center.  My opponent placed both of his objectives close to his left side and massed his several units of troops around them, severely limiting what units I actual had in range.  Unfortunately, the Necrons stole the initiative...

Over the course of my first two turns, all I managed to achieve was loosing First Blood and a Broadside (and thus a second VP) to my opponent.

Thankfully, my luck shifted on turn 3 and I began methodically removing his troops from their held objectives.  His Overlord w/ Immortal escort and C'tan shard were foot slogging to my formerly held objective, but weren't going to reach it by a long shot.  I used this to my advantage and flanked around to simply remove his scoring units vice duking it out with a warscythe and C'tan...

Long story short, on the final turn, my Sunshark's plasma bomb and Riptide's HBC tore into the IG squad sitting on his furthest objective (luckily causing them to flee) while my Riptide then jumped into denial range of his close objective.  End result: Tau held an objective and had Line Breaker for 4 VP.  Necron / IG: First Blood and a slain Heavy Support for 2 VP.

Any other close calls / narrow victories?

This is a game back from 5th edition, when I was still learning to play... I had maybe, thirty ork boys, a nob, a warboss, and a trukk. Maybe Meganobz, I can't remember. He had a Carnifax, a unit if genestealers, sone Gants, and maybe a tyranid warrior squad? Or a prime? It was a long time ago.
Long story short, it came down to a duel between my Nob (who had a Big Choppa) and one of his models (which for the life of me I can't remember what it was.)
He won the duel, but it was pretty frikkin epic.

I had a game with 4th-5th Edition Daemons codex where I started with a 2 point deficit. My big, expensive, almost-indestructible, Flying Monstrous Creature, Lord of Change Warlord swoops in ahead of everything else to take out a quad-gun that is the only real threat to him. He fails to kill it, so it fires back at him. Hit, failed grounding test, lost a wound. He's now a grounded model in front of at least 2 squads of first-rank-fire-second-rank-fire lasguns. End of turn 1, and my opponent now has First Blood and Slay the Warlord! I might have actually pulled out a tie or something in that game, but it was rough digging myself out of that big a hole.
Cured of what I'm suffering from, but suffering from the cure.

Had a game at a tournament last month, daemon flying circus went first against my bike council/serpent spam.

They screamed to death my wraithknight and blew away my whole council[so literally half of the points in my army gone turn1], I spent the rest of the game trying to keep my wave serpents alive whilst trying to down flying monsters, I finally manage to kill them off in turn 5 and drop some avengers on objectives, all I need to do is blow a few plague bearers off an objective which I cant quite do because I totally forget my serpent shields ignore cover!

We roll for another turn and get it, theres nothing he can do to threaten me and id gives me a whole turn to shoot down a few plague bearers.....and time up is called so we cant play the turn.  :'(

Really fun game though, from expecting to be tabled in a couple of turns after the turn 1 disaster to totally taking over the game and dominating.

I was playing in a 500 point lightning tourney against tau with chaos and we utterly decimated each other. On turn 3 all that was left was my hellbrute and one of my opponents crisis suits. He jumped behind my hellbrute, shot it in the back, got a 6 to penetrate, a 6 on the chart, 6" for the explosion, I rolled a 6 to wound, he rolled a 1 to save. I got first blood, we both got slay the warlord, and he got one of the other ancillary objectives.

I played a 1000pts game today. It was a bit of a joke really as we were playing on a 6ft x 2ft board.. Ended up playing Big Guns Never Tire with 4 objectives.... That was already more obj's than I had scoring units.... SO I set about systematically butchering my opponant (Which went suprisingly well amazingly enough!)

Suddenly I realised we were on last turn and that Due to the mission, heavy supports count as scoring. All  my opposition had left was a unit of scout and a Storm Raven. I still had most of my army... However, He was holding 2 objectives, I had none.

I managed to contest one by running my large troop squad on to the same as his scouts (thus contesting it) and had an incredibly lucky shot from my own Storm raven and exploded his one. At which point rather than face my assault phase with 10 inits and 7 neo's breathing down his neck, he called it quits....

Note to self: Remember the mission...

Back in my early days (about 12 years ago now!) I went to the GW in central Sydney with my cousin and some friends. We got in on a tournament-style day event and were pretty excited about it. I open my boxes and lo-and-behold, I brought the wrong things! Instead of a swarmy nid army backed up by a few powerhouse MCs I ended up with 20 stealers, a tyrant, 2 fexs, lictor, 2 zoans, 2 biovores a bunch of Warriors and Ravenors.

I got matched up against my friend who played skimmer heavy Eldar led by an Avatar. His skimmers took out my warriors and ravenors really quick but had trouble with the heavier stuff. Sometime throughout the game he charged my Tyrant with the Avatar and butchered it. Boasting that Avatars are the best thing since sliced bread I charged in with stealers and rolled a WHOLE lot of 6's to hit, autowounding it due to old rending and killing it without taking any casualties.

My zoanthrope also beat a Farseer at mindwar, polishing it off with a nice Warp Blast and the Carnifexs charged his assault troops (banshees and scorps), killing them too. In the end it was a tie, but it was an uphill struggle from the beginning.

Another time when I actually brought my proper army with me I faced a Ultramarines player who fielded 3 dreads, a 10 man assault squad with Librarian, couple of min/max lasplas tac squads (only needed 5 per squad back then) and a bunch of devastators. Most of my big beasties went down first turn, leaving only a carnifex, a handful of warriors for synapse and a swarm of hormagaunts and termagants. His assault squad jumped over some trees to assault my hormagaunts, killing a good 20 or so. Return attacks from the remaining gaunts killed enough to force a leadership test, which he failed. The rest of the unit fell back into terrain, and every single one of them failed their dangerous terrain test and died, librarian included!

The dreadnaughts charged my fex 1 by 1 and all got minced in turn.

Despite the fact he still had enough firepower to easily table me now I was out of assault he chucked a fit and conceded

Played a 3000 point game with my brother and his friend. 3 objectives. My Marines VS their Tyranids and Necrons.

End of the game, the Swarmlord had the remains of a Tactical Squad, 3 Bolters and a Sergeant on one objective. One another objective, an Annihiliation Barge sat contesting the objective. And finally, in the middle, a combat squad of 3 Tactical Marines and a Librarian faced off with a Tervigon and a ton of Termagaunts.

I immediately challenged with the Sergeant, and although the Swarmlord promptly took the Sergeant's power axe and bloodily spread him around like so much Nutella, the other 3 Marines lived on to contest the objective.

In my end, my Terminators shot with their assault cannon into the Armour 13 front armour, hit once, rolled a 6 to penetrate, roll a 5 on the rend, and a 6 to the damage chart, allowing my nearby Scouts to claim the objective.

And the Librarian in the middle managed , despite Shadow in the Warp and only 1 attack hitting and having useless psychic powers (no Biomancy, sadly), managed to banish the Tervigon to the Warp, and all but one Marine bravely died to the Termagaunts.

That gave me 1 objective over them, so a narrow, narrow win (and had the game continued, I'd have likely failed. But that's the DE player in me, always use last turn shenanigans.)

Just recently played an 800 point game, Space Wolves versus Black Templars. (New Codex ones. It was yesterday.)
I had 3 TWC, a Wolf Lord, and two squads of 10 Grey Hunters with 1 plasma gun each.
He had the Emperor's Champion, some other HQ, 5 guys with a PC, 5 guys with a plasma gun, 8 with a flamer, and 5 termies with an assault cannon.
I got turn one, moved my TWC forward at full speed, planted Grey Hunters A. In cover, just in range of his guys, and B. Behind a hill for cover, also in range... And caused 0 wounds.
He then killed 2 Grey Hunters and one of my TWC with shooting, along with both of my Wolf Lord's fenrisian wolves.
I charge my remaining TWC at his PC squad of Marines, and my Wolf Lord at his HQ guy (who wasn't attached to anyone.) My shooting still caused no wounds. One of my TWC dies in close combat, and I don't finish off his squad. My Lord kills his guy, but has 1 wound left and is standing in the open.
His turn, my Wolf Lord dies. Obviously. Everything else marches towards my army, though my last TWC finishes one of his squads... And I realize something. I've got 3 Victory points from his HQ guy and one from that marine squad, he's only got two. As long as I am not wiped, he can only tie...

So I run like a chicken with my last TWC to the far corner of the board and start shooting at the oncoming forces, causing... no wounds again. He kills a few of my guys with shooting, and here's where it gets good:
I kill 1 terminator and 2 Marines with Overwatch. He fails 4 separate charges.
Next, I kill 2 more Terminators with shooting and 2 more Marines. He charges me again, fails all but the Terminators, and the terminators fail 3 saves before they get to hit.
My turn again, I kill his weakest marine squad and get 3 lucky hits against his emperors champion. The game ends.
For the first three turns, I stood no chance. After that I whooped butt.
