Void Shields and the Return of the Assault Army?

Hi All,
I've been reading about Escalation (D-weapons... sigh...) and Stronghold Assault, and noticed that there's this handy little thing called a Void Shield Generator.

They're clearly made to give you some D-support protection, as it gives you an AV13 building with a single AV12 shield that protects everything in 12" from a single D-weapon or other glance/pen weapon shot.  It regenerates on a 5+ roll, and you can buy up to three of them.

Sort of mediocre sounding if you're running say... IG or Necrons who have decent AV vehicles.

But for some builds, this is a godsend!

Why?

Consider two types of lists that I've always wanted to run, but get shot to dickens now-a-days:

Ork Trukk Horde and Mass Raider Wyches

Why those two?

They have cheap assault forces that can easily mess up whatever you point them at as they just come in mass volume.

Their main weakness is that their transports are easily blown apart and if it explodes, you're losing most of your squads.

Enter Void Shields.

Now for about the cost of two Land Speeders, you can essentially buy three "get out of being blown up" cards for your paper-thin army.
That's really quite good.

And if your opponent also has Void Shields, that's ok, as you don't actually plan on shooting them with these lists.

But, why would you run mass assault units?

Well, that depends if you us Escalation, as D-weapons obliterate any elite unit, but can be taken down with Haywire Grenades, or if a Walker, can be tied up in assault...

Also, well...  they're a lot more fun than gunline armies, and it'll really make your opponent sweat knowing that a lot more of your army is going to be intact than usual.

So... what do you all think?

Void Shields going to be a big thing, or just something that gets ignored in a few months?

Also you can set these up anywhere within your half of the board. Careful placement could cover you for the turn or two it takes to hit your opponent.

That's... a really good point.

You could totally then roll up to assault range under the protection of Void Shields.

I really want to try this out now :)

The thing is, if it just protects against one shot then it only really works for a Deathstar style unit. If you are running Ork Trucks or Wyches then you are going to still be taking the usual massed penetrating hits that take out their transports anyway. Unless im getting the wrong idea about the rules for these things?

It would work for a deathstar though as the only hits you really need to stop or those D-Wep hits.

It's an extra AV12 on top of the usual layers of protection. It means that S5 or below can't hurt anything, S6 is basically useless, and so will need Anti-Tank weapons to fire on it in order to breach it.
