Title: Narric's Miniature Modelling & Painting log
Post by: Narric on May 17, 2013, 04:17:45 PM
So, I figured that even if it doesn't go anywhere, that maybe I should keep a record/blog/plogg going of the models I'm making from scratch. I could use it as blog material, but I don't think I have anything of real substance yet. :P

So far I've started four models:
- Salamander
- Fire Goblin
- Arachnid Knight
- Human

Here are the initial "Armatures" for the models (left-right; Salamander, human, Fire Goblin, AK):

I've managed to put some time into them, giving them some more bulk. (left-right; Salamander, Fire Goblin, Kinght, Human)

I'm mostly using these as practice for model making in general. Its slow, to tell the truth :P

Critism and Suggestions would be most appreciated ^_^

Update already :P

Decided there was a lot of lumpy GS on a couple guys, so I took  a hobby knife to them:

For the most part, they look a lot closer to how I want them, though closer to the base, the wire does get uncovered. Hopefully, when I find more time, I'll be able to include more detail.

In the mean time, I started another model, and its a lot larger than the previous lot:

Yep, thats my first attempt at a Spider Armature. I foresee the spiders giving me the most trouble :P The two front Claws are raised up on purpose, and it should hopefully becoe clear why when I get some GS on to the wire.

Critism and Suggestions would be most appreciated ^_^

The framework for the spider is sweet! Looking like a good starting point for the rest. Looking forward to seeing more.

The Framework for the Spider would be sweet, if the result would be a spider. Based on some quickly done concept art based on the wireframe, the result would appear more akin to an ant then spider.
I think I'll be doing the spider predominatly frameless, as its less likely to create unwanted results.
I won't be disposing the Wireframe. Maybe I could do Ant Mounts for the Fire Goblins? :P

Unfortunately I haven't done much modeling :( The Greenstuff and models are in front of me always, but I keep distracting myself from it.

There are a few tools and items I think would make it easier, but unfortunately I can't purchase them until next weekend :P

Managed to get some work done that I feel I can show. I've been focused on getting the Spider right.

(http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2013/155/a/d/001_by_narric_sb0-d67stdf.jpg) (http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/155/c/f/002_by_narric_sb0-d67stf0.jpg)

to give an idea of size, the central body bulb is about 1cm across.

Adding GS to enlarge the thorax and to sculpt the face is going to be an absolute bitch :P

Sorry for the lack of update to this ^_^;;

Been trying to do a fully miniature in Sketchup 8. You've probably seen my complaining about aspects of it :P

Here is an older WIP picture:
Spoiler
(http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/200/a/e/boxmanwip1_by_narric_sb0-d6e89fb.png)

I have since continued with the legs, and with some retrospect, decided to redo the upper arms to fit with the rest of the model.

Front
(http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/200/9/5/boxmanwip2f_by_narric_sb0-d6e89ry.png)
Side
(http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/200/b/1/boxmanwip2s_by_narric_sb0-d6e89s3.png)

And yes, this will be a fully multi-part model. The head is rotatable, and the arms and legs are ball & socket. I'm wondering how to do the lower. Such as whether to do three pairs of specialised lower arms, Ranged:Melee:Fist/Hand or make the lower arms and Hands/Weapons seperate pieces.

What remains to be done?:
- Arms (Upper, Lower, and Hands/Weapon)
- Feet
- Power Pack

Thanks for Reading

Comments and critism welcome.

I'm starting work on the lower arms, but I'd like some input for what weapons would be preferred.

I could easily go the route of mimicking Tau Empire Battlesuit weapons, but I'd prefer to have an original weapon idea. Even to use as a basic design.

Posting somewhere esle than RP, Rumours or Enclave :P

So I've been working on a thing. This thing is a Frigate. For Space. It has a big gun.

I pretty much designed this as I went along. Really proud of it.

Learnt a few neat things about Sketchup whilst making this.

Up next is a "Dreadnought" ship. Use Gun, and if that don't work, use more gun.

Is that what I think it is? Because it looks like a ship-sized railgun with various bits of... well, ship, built around the edges.

Maybe :P

Now that you say it, I see it too XD

My thoughts was essentially a Large main weapon, on a single Frigate.

Practically a scaled-up version of the frigate, with double fire-power. :P

If you fire one gun at a time, would that spin it round slightly?

Something else I was thinking of - why does nobody build spaceships in such a way that everything is focussed around the center of mass? Any chance you could do a similar design where the rest of the ship was moved from the end to the middle of the main core?

Uhm...

Can I have a vizual reference to what the heck you just said? :P And do you mean the Frigate or the Dreadnought?

I'd assume they'd fire both guns at once.

Also, if only one gun fires (perhaps becuase the other has been damaged) all they need to do is adjust the output of the engines on the same side.

Shiny fighter.

The ship currently has a very defined front and rear. My suggestion was basically move the segments at the rear towards the middle. So you have a knot-in-a-rope effect.

Something like that. Where most of the bulk of the ship is in the centre. In this case, shift the wings back a bit so they stick out the same distance on both sides, and that's about what I was going for.

Is it bad I'm thinking up different factions to explain different styles of ship design? :P
So far I have the "Corporate Fleet," the "Traders Alliance," and the "Planetary Coalition Space Force"

I've also been trying a more centralized ship design to my next Frigate:

Threw together some of my ships to give a sense of scale.

Spoiler
(http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/225/5/4/scaling_ships_by_narric_sb0-d6hzu9p.png)

That little dot is the Bomber (not yet shown here) and has had to be scaled down to x0.5 its orignal size in order to be close to here small I'd imagine it would be to the Frigate and Dreadnought.

I'm thinking I should try to re-create a Imperial Frigate/Dreadnought to aid the scale comparison.

OK, I'm trying to figure out if these craft are even realistic :P I'm using the Frigate to begin with.

It is (this is very aproximate to an undefined scale):
83m tall, by 353m long, by 151m wide.

Assume half that multiplied together is the volume (~2.2x106 m3) and assuming Steel is the majority of its mass it is 17x109kg

Do these numbers sound even remotely real?
(just googled, and apparently it shorter than the Great Pyramid of Giza), and in length it is shorter than the Eiffel tower is tall.)

Unfortunately, I havne't been doing much for "Trade Routes." I've been model painting instead :P

Here are the models before primer:

I was kinda messing around with the first layer of colour to the armour. I tried Blue mixed with pearlescent white, water down blue, and grey as the first layer.
Spoiler
(http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/267/a/4/002_by_narric_sb0-d6npfhv.jpg)

I continued on a bit, discovering that the watered down blue paint made great wash. The armour was painted over with blue-grey paint, washed, and then a final layer of grey paint.
The cloaks have also been painted, but I forgot to snap a pic of them :P
Spoiler

The skin was muddy brown at first, and then had a wash of orange.

I think they look good, however its definately highlighting my poor choice of paints. Note to all beginner painters, don't buy acrylic or gloss paints. Always go enamal and/or matt paints.

The models are Anvil Industries Black Ops Recon team. They're one-piece models, save for one dude who has alt head options. Pretty damn good price for the five of them.

Looking good! I've found Anvil Industries to be good quality as well, although I'm pretty suprised those are 1-piece models. I considered buying some of these guys but wasn't sure if they're too bulky to pass as scouts with sniper rifles. What are your thoughts?

A chap who reviewed them (not me) Stated he was going to use them as Pre-heresy Wolf Scouts. Personally, I'd just use them as scouts anyway. Considering you're not going to be able to use these models in a GW store, most Game Groups are relaxed enough to allow such proxies. The "Spotter" technically does have a sniper Rifle. Its just a smaller rifle. He is the one intended to be Sergeant, but I prefer the guy standing and holding his gun in a relaxed pose.

Got my first squad of A.R.C. Troopers (http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=108_112&product_id=287) today. These will be standing in as one of my two Command Squads (http://secondsphere.org/index.php?topic=1486.0).

In order of pictures:

I like the Ion Rifle, because playing them as Plasma Guns, it actually makes sense that the dude would die when the weapon "Gets Hot!" as the powerpack is unavoidably attached to his back.

The Firestorm Carbines look awesome in person. They could easily be used as smaller variants of Storm Bolters. You get extra ammo canistars with them as well ^_^

These guys wll have to wait a little while, until I can get a new spray of primer. I've only got Skull White right now.

Finally took some time out to snap a couple pictures.

These are some wip work of the "Centurian Weapons Defense Platform" AKA the "IG Centurian Model" :P

I've tried sorting out the edges of the Cock-pit, and have also started on the arms and back.

I'm kinda stuck for ideas of how to do the weapons. I'm thinking of stcking to my first image for the CWDP with Lacannon and Missile Launcher weapons. One part of my idea is to have the arms/weapons interchangable, with the power/ammo cases attached to the square "exhuats" that are currently on the back of the model.

What other weapons should I consider for this model?
Title: Re: Narric's Miniature Modelling & Painting Blog
Post by: Narric on December 23, 2013, 12:25:22 AM
I do still do hobby stuff ya know. ^_^

This is a nice little squad of Exo-lords I've slowly worked on. For the most part, I've re-used parts from my first purchase from Anvil Industry, becuase i have this terrible habit of breaking models apart if I don't like the look of them. Which can lead to a lot of broken and unusable bitz, even if I was an Ork/Orc player.

I decided I really liked the idea of non-symetrical Shoulder Pads. I guess its that whole "EXTREME ARMOUR!!" aesthetic(?). Nontheless, I think it looks cool. In my mind, it also allows for greater movement of the trigger arm, for actions such as throwing grenades, whilst still giving protection to the left side which would be pointing to the enemy.

The squad is also partially influenced by my recent games of 6th ed Kill Team. These guys are for covert operations, hence the Black Widow Silenced Carbines (http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=60_87&product_id=307).

The Torsos, Legs and Spartan Shoulder Pads are from my first Exo-lord purchase, which you can see the squad I made here (http://narric-sb0.deviantart.com/art/Steam-Lords-313153175). Looking back and comparing the parts from then to now, I can see the changes Joel & Co have made.

As you may notice, there are in fact a few pieces that aren't Anvil. these are mostly leftover pieces from my old Warhammer 40k Bitz Box. They all mostly have Scout Heads from the Scout Bike and Space Wolf Grey Hunters(?) box sets. The sword for the "Sergeant" is and old Khorne Berzerker "Ceremonial Blade" which I thought looked cool as an ornate by effective combat weapon and badge of rank.

Yes, there is alot of messy green-stuff fur. I'm still fairly new to green stuff, despite having used it for a large number of models over the years. I just never experimented with it. With these guys I also tried for a Rifle holster, and belts. In some places, I've had to use cured GS to fill gaps, which is often much easier than using fresh stuff. I guess it helps to keep that scrap.

When the weather here in England shows signs of warming up, I'll be basecoating these chaps, and painting them to match my BLACK OPS Sniper Recon Team (http://daemonfiregames.blogspot.com/2013/09/black-ops-sniper-recon-team-part-3.html). This along with weapon choices should give them an image of unity.

In the works, i have a commander, who is my first real attempt at interchangable arms for different weapon options. So far, I have a Power Axe (http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=60_88&product_id=127), "Bolt Pistol" and Firestorm Carbine (http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=108_109&product_id=268) option for the right arm, whilst the left currently only holds a severed head. Lovely ^_^

Thanks for reading, and enjoy the pictures.

Image makes it look ugly, and I'm going to be honest, it is pretty ugly :P

Hopefully though, with some Layers of Plasticard for detail, and to hide all they duct-tape, I'll have something usable

This is based on a very old PDF doc which has been sitting in my PC for a long time. As I fanlly have the materials, I figured I might as well try it once.

If there is enough interest, I'll post up a copy of the file for others to Download. Just don't tell you-=know-who where you got it from ;)

Thats all folks, thanks for Reading

I can't decide if I should do humanoid armaturs, or just to the weapon systems seperated away from the Cockpit by struts. I don't think I'll use the back-piece either way, as it just looks daft now.

To be honest I wasn't planning on making him anytime soon, especially not this style. The Warriors of Chaos "Warriors" back piece came in my order from Bitz Box, and I couldn't remember why I kept it. Thankfully I had enough scraps and parts lying around to make another model :P
Made loosely following the guide for making Pre-heresy Space Wolves, found here.
The Axe is actually a longer (and left handed) variant of the Axe Anvil sells. Took a bit of pinning, but I got it to work. It feels better now it is longer, and I definately feel a sense of pride knowing I got the pinning right on such narrow resin.

The Strategist

OK, maybe not the most awe inspring name, but it comes from the fact that he is my first ernest attempt at a magnetized mini. This means that I can slowly add more options, so I can use the same figure for numerous games and not have to do too much conversion work to achieve different wargear loadouts.
It has been a learning experience, and I know I need a new Pin Vice set because of this project. I seem to have lost one of the fasteners, meaning that most Drill Bits between 1mm and 2.5mm are either too big or too small for my Pin Vice to work correctly.
Current wargear options are: Bolt Pistol, Firestorm Carbine, Power Axe for the right arm, with a Chainsword, and Trophy arm for the left.
In additon, he is one of my Commander characters for my Grey Lords army.

I like the Butcher. The model gives off a strong aura and you can tell he has power. I'm not so keen on the Strategist, mainly because of the size ratio between his head and right shoulder pad, it just doesn't look right. Having a magnetic model is pretty cool though.

TBH I was never really sold on the Shoulder pad. I mostly did the GS work to try and hide the Plasticard used to fix the shoulder pad in place.

The Nobel

Named such becuase I felt "The Sword Master" would have been too obvious.
Including a simple conversion option which it a magnetized head, becuase why the fef not? The current head choice is a similar design to The Strategist, but that is mostly due to too few Head options in my Bitz Box.
The model base is the Captain model from Dark Vengeance for Warhammer 40k. I've taken a great deal of time to remove as much Dark Angel iconography as possible, as scavanged armour can only account for some much heraldy and only works if the heraldry is mish-mashed.
Not much more I can say. He is a very simple project, and is my backup for the Warlords contest. Gonna be getting him basecoated hopefully this weekend :)

It looks pretty good so far, although there doesn't appear to be an obvious door. How do you get in?

Also, if it's on treads then I don't think you can call it a walker.

Those are awkwardly two things I'm wanting to change. For access, I was thinking of a top-hatch, that risen area between the HBs. To make it a walker, I was planning on designing some Bi-ped legs. I am toying with the idea of doing a quad of legs, hence the name "Centaur."

I have tried Milliput, which acted like clay, and hardened crazy stiff. It was just too crumbly for me and the water to prevent it from sticking to my fingers made it slippery as soap.
I did find however mixing roughly 50/50 with GS, that you have a modeling putty that is extremely maliable, but cures decently hard. Haven't found a use myself yet, as I don't normally do much putty only scratch builds...

Another mix I found was adding a little bit of modeling clay (the stuff you give to kids that is always soft) at roughly 70% GS to 30% clay, you have crazy flexible putty, that sets to a flexible finish, which I find is great for capes, robes and when I get some more I'll set how it fairs forhair and Chainmail.

Something we sell at work called Fimo, which seems to be for making Beads for Beadcraft. Mostly the Metalic ones interest me, but I might just go with a plain colour to mix with the GS same as the Modelling Clay.

Slow progress....

Realised I need detail on the backs of the wings :P

Pictures of the wings attached to an Exo Lord model:

Now my concern leans towards how can I effectively and reliably duplicate these?
I'm not looking forward to all this cutting and slicing, and glueing. Maybe now would be a good time to buy some Blu-stuff (http://blu-stuff.com/)?

Good news, everyone.(http://i.imgur.com/8JCCv2K.png?2)

After visiting a local arts and crafts store, I found a small and relatively cheap pack of silicone putty, which would be perfect for making the molds to duplicate the Hawk Wings I am making.

The bad news however, is that I cannot purchase the putty until next friday. Curse you Wurnstrum.

In related better news, I have started adding Green to the pieces to finish off the details. No pictures to show just yet however.

(http://i.imgur.com/8JCCv2K.png?2)Good news, everyone.

I managed to purchase the two-part moulding putty and have been experimenting with it.

I believe I have got the casting down, and here is my first succesful casting of the Swooping Hawk Wings, alongside the Originals and the blu-stuff casts.

Shall be leaving them until tomorrow before cutting the flash off.

I've also been trying on smaller pieces as well, with mixed success.

Lastly I've been trying to mix the Blu-stuff with the Green Stuff (wow, such science, many specific) which leads to a putty that takes even longer to set, and I fear does not hold its shape very well once cured.

I now have a fair number of various duplicates of various pieces.
I have made:
- Eldar Wings
- Gue'vesa Torsos
- IG Chainswords with left hand
- Artillary Shells
- & some Gue'vesa Shoulder pad blanks.

I'm diggin up this Plog, as I'm currently waiting on an order of Models from SG (http://www.scotiagrendel.com/index.html), which shall be the final few models I need for a legal (if potentially under whelming) Junker force at 500pts.

The list is as follows:
Spoiler
Preator = 35pts

2x Lictors = 2x 20pts

Exo-suits (4) = 145pts
Decurion

Convict Legionaires (10) = 152pts
Flame Thower

Convict Legionaires (9) = 128pts
Decurion

Total = 500pts

This is what each model is and can do:
Spoiler
Preator = IG Commander
- equipped with a standard Pistol and CCW
- Have the equivalent to the Split Fire special rule
- have a +2 bonus to Morale Rolls they take
- confers a morale check re-roll to friendly units within 6" and LOS

Lictor = IG Commissar (but answer to the Preator)
- equipped with pistol
- Can force a "Convict" squad within 6" to rally by activating Nueral Spikes. Sacrifices shooting attack to do this. May alternatively detonate Suicide Bombers or Suicide Bikers.
- Can be bought for specific Convict squads.

Exo-suits = Space Marines
- equipped with a Powerfist-like piece of wargear and a multibarreled Grenade Launcher ranged weapon
- Have an Armour save (highly uncommon across most Void 1.1 races) which is a 7+ on a D10. Roughly equivalent to a 4+ armour save.
- Decurions (Sergeants) have Split Fire and +1 bonus to Morale checks.
- Standard Exo-suits may be replaced with Flamer suits. The model basicaly has two flamers that may be fired independantly or combined. Light Flamer Throwers (equivalent to Hand Flamers in 40k) can be used in combat and are treated as Str4 CCws with a +1 to hit.

Convict Legionaires = Penal Legion
- equipped with Shotguns, Combat Knives, and a Battleshield
- Shotguns cause more damage at close range and are Str5 CCWs
- Battleshields reduce the enemy "to wound" roll be -1 so long as the shot originated from the Convicts front facing.
- enemy models that try to hit them in close combat suffer a -1 to hit penalty for each model they're in base contact with (up to a max of -3). The special rule as a whole is difficult to shorthand....
- Decurions have Split Fire and +1 to Morale Checks.

I'm mainly looking forward to converting the Exo-suits and Preator.

I need to re-take the pictures of my Junkers, so I'll be doing that tomorrow and posting them up :)

Finally purchased the Rulebook and the Junker Forcebook, and of sweet baby religious prophet, they gorgeous compared to the PDF downloads (http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=217_218_59_69) I've been using up to this point.

I also recieved a new set of Convict sprues, which will do nicely for the Exo-suit conversion, alongside some models I shall be using for my Preator and Lictors.

The Preator and Lictors were chosen from the "Militia (http://www.scotiagrendel.com/Products/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=217_218_59_67)" range of models. Admitantly its a small range, but the models all have character to them. I wouldn't be surprised if I did use all of them as a character at some point.

I decided whilst waiting for the delivery that her name shall be Gabriella. Her lineage doesn't start with much honour, being descended from thieves and murderers, but she fought with blood and passion to achieve the rank she now holds. Her Shame to "Fame" tale is what inspires the Convicts she leads into battle.

Then there are my Lictors.
Spoiler
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mI-BJCeugiE/U-E4M6RtDLI/AAAAAAAAAm0/hPMAbCVFlFE/s1600/003.JPG)
"Rudus" (on the left) served time within the convict legions himself. Yo'd think this would make him kinda to the convicts under his own charge, but "Rudus" believes such treatment would soften them up, and he will not stand for a worthless army.

Castorio (on the right) is the most recent in a long family line of Enforcers. He wears his rank with pride, and ensures that all convicts he holds the leash to know it. He has been known to activate the neural spike over petty deeds, but only to ensure his charges know his control over them.

On the modeling side of things, I personally didn't like the pistols they all carried. Yeah, they look sort of cool, but these are supposed to be people of rank, so why carry hodge podge weaponry to the battlefield. I decided to replace them all with the Widow Maker Pistols  (http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/The-Armoury/Rifles-Shotguns-Pistols/Widow-Maker-Pistol)sold by Anvil Industry.

Now these look consistant!

To be honest it has been a while since I worked with Metal miniatures. My experience with Games Workshop Metal models put me off, as I hated the idea of identical armies and characters. It lead to some ingenious conversions, if I toot my own horn, but unfortunately those models are gone to me.

All Rudus and Castorio need now is a little GS work to give them the Neural Spike Activators, and they'll be ready for paint.

For Gabriella, I also added a Combat Blade, as per her Forcebook wargear.

I think the pose works, and I look forward to the paintwork.

I may not be able to get painting, as I work during the day and at the end of the day the sunlight isn't with me to go out back and spray basecoat. Hopefully at the weekend I'll be able to.

Now this is a challenge I can sink my teeth into....

(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pxu1LVnmz7E/U-PlEf6O2OI/AAAAAAAAAn0/DEgxFP0aMPI/s1600/001.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z6pqyAgF0kA/U-PlE0Nx_OI/AAAAAAAAAn4/MOM2rmWdrw0/s1600/002.JPG)
Haven't quite done enough to start the GS work, as I'm trying to bulk it up to ensure the GS has something to mold around.

Inital modelling is/was a bit tricky and annoying, as I am currently using Super Glue instead of the normal Poly Cement I would use for Plastic models. Using Super Glue has meant faster drying times, meaning faster work, but I'm making sure to stop and examine what I'm doing regularly, as I don't want this project to go south without my knowledge.
The discs of green are from some molded "shells" I cast myself. The casting isn't 100% and the shells are a little bit squished in a certain direction, and bent slightly.
I hope that this conversion project inspires the Scotia Grendal Team into making a resin/plastic kit for the Exo-suits, as that would be very awesome. For me its also a great way or me to show off my modelling skillz...... or not.

Work certainly didn't stop, and over the past couple days I have made an extensive amount of progress. I'm personally pleased with how good the Heavy Grape Gun is looking, whilst simultaneously being apprehensive of the trails of sculpting the Cestus (Powerfist)

Thank goodness for being a hoarder?
The Shoulder Pads were bought from Anvil industry (http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/Exo-Lords/Shoulder-Pads/Roman-Shoulder-Pads). In hindsight, I perhaps should have bought the "Terminator" scaled shoulder pads to emphasize the bulkiness of the Exo-suit. But for my first team, I think I'll look good regardless.

To be honest the GS work is what is scaring me with this, as I want the finished model to look its best, to compare to the original sculpt and metal models. I'll be sure to get over it though.
Title: Re: Narric's MM&Plog - Junkers
Post by: Narric on August 18, 2014, 06:21:08 PM
A very unexpected addition to my Junker Force. This Artilary piece started out as just some random "Junk" around my work station.

I suppose in a way that is what the Junkers do, they turn refuse into working weaponry and tech. I just wasn't expecting to get quite immersed in Junker metallity just yet. Considering they're primarily soldiered by convicts, i don't want to think about where I could be going.

All the current pieces together.
I very much just raded any seemingly suitable piece off my workstation, drilling holes, and gluing random bits together, and its rather surprising how it all looks. The main gun is certainly pure luck. I'm definately going to be considering casting it in Blu-stuff. You can also see the mobile base plate, and a spent shell casing.

The Main Cannon is made from a couple Robogear missile launchers, a junker backpack, and some random bits and pieces from my workstation. The barrel itself is two Brush bristle protectors, one inside the other.

The Artillary base is made from a decorate gem from a piece of wall art. I get these sort of things from work, as the wall art regularly comes back, or even into the store, broken. These pieces get left lying around unused, so what I do is a service.

The Spent Shell Casing is just a random little piece. I figured I'm going to make this so it can be modelled either as ready to fire, or in the process of a re-load. This will give the model some much needed variety.
Title: Re: Narric's MM&Plog - Junkers

The challenge continues....

And there has been some serious GS work done to it.
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Y3GjwcfAvdI/U-_KJYcnhNI/AAAAAAAAApc/uaCugm56N0s/s1600/027.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xcV5QogFKnQ/U-_KJi_WRXI/AAAAAAAAApY/Hf65XBbc0_M/s1600/028.JPG)

Its kind of amazing how much a difference some bulking out with Green Stuff can make. I'm now feeling incredibly confident that my scratch-build wouldn't look out of place amongst a unit of the official model. I do admit, the feet could use a bit more work. they look like the stumpy feet of the human character models from Mass Effect. I also including the face cloth covering. I think for future Convict Junkers I'll probably do the same, as it fits with the artwork a lot better than the basic plastic pieces. I also included the bulk that connects the torso to the hip motors, and the "power supply" on the back. This guy is a solid mass, just waiting for his....

Armaments...
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qu9Ynmwwfyw/U-_MHOkMGcI/AAAAAAAAAps/1TG9Q6P3hgQ/s1600/029.JPG) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WvegzVtEw-c/U-_MHaRrJII/AAAAAAAAAp0/SXKzDwYTxDQ/s1600/031.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VwtXBn404zc/U-_MHKBXDOI/AAAAAAAAApw/_fdJqynX_HM/s1600/030.JPG)
And here is the first. The much more heavily bulked up "Heavy Grape Gun." Now with structure and piping.
To be honest, the hardest part of the HGG was really the modelling of the gun barrels. the GS work is really just filling and bulking. I'm kinda surprised about how much I worried about it.
Learning experience. Hopefully now I'll be less inclined to put a project on hold due to demanding GS work.

(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6SRd46ykcbo/U-_NHmVr0BI/AAAAAAAAAqE/6RQSOJzgflM/s1600/032.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-omlMcl4mO3s/U-_NH2WR8xI/AAAAAAAAAqM/mctDWXmc_UM/s1600/033.JPG)
The Cestus, which to 40k players would be the equivalent of a Powerfist, is still demanding. I probably should have bulked it up with sprue pieces more before doing the GS work, but I think I would have lost the freedom for how it will ultimately look.

"Strongest left hand in the Void."

I'll be honest I nearly sculpted the fingers for a right hand. Would have made for a very special Exo-suit Junker. From what I've learnt with this one, I know that posting the fist is actually going to be very easy, which is great know, as I already have a pose in mind for the second Exo-suit.

This suit so far has been a fantastic learning experience. As well as a proper test of the tools I have to hand. Strangely, my files can't handle green stuff, but grinding down my sculpting tool for a flatter surface was no problem. I'm thinking some new tools should be on order.

Next thing for me to feel hesitant about is going to be painting, and that's more because I fear for the paints and brushes I use, rather than my own skill. Joy

"Lets slap some junk together and see it makes a good Cannon...."

Said a Junker technician once upon a time. He must have some sort of Midas touch, because I don't see how this pile of scrape could possibly work. Mainly showing off the GS work I have done to it since I last posted about the SFC. Mostly I've been gap filling. When it comes round to making it look like it can be fired, I'm going have  pile of difficulty to wade through.

(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-K8NtZHOJwM0/U-_TD1--IdI/AAAAAAAAAqc/qUohdqBbNEM/s1600/034.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SupBkqQHgmE/U-_TEfbNcSI/AAAAAAAAAqk/bL659mSlPMI/s1600/036.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oorOmzkRQ4s/U-_TEVTbqLI/AAAAAAAAAqg/FzzFrO78eSw/s1600/035.JPG)
As a simple scrape together counts-as, I doubt I could do worse, and I'm sure if I managed to duplicate the model, a battery of these would give my opponent pause to charge my lines.

Praetorian Guard head without face mask.

Now there is a face only a mother could love.
Made by chopping and lopping a Vampire Count Crypt Ghouls face to pieces, and gluing it to an equally chopped and lopped Legionary head. God damn that's an ugly mug. The plume is simple Plasticard and green stuff. I'm going to build up a layer or two, and cut the "feathers" into it. I think I got the shape right, its just the details which are being a nuisance. The Praetorian Guard aren't going to be featured in my force for a while, as I need to focus on my current character, infantry, and heavy support choices. Still, something for me to look in horror at whilst I work.

Realized I can't decide what to do with the spare Convict Legionaries I will have after doing the Exo-suit conversions. So I'm looking for some external input for what to do with these last six guys. That is enough for a couple of models:

- 4 to 6x Grenadier Convicts (swap Shields for Grenades)
- 4 to 6x Suicide bombers (swap Shields and Shotguns with Explosives)
- 4 to 6x Dune Raiders (requires heavy conversion (a full bike made for each), fast moving and shooty)
- Up to 6x Suicide Bikers (Suicide bomber on a Motorcycle, bought individually)
- 3 to 6x Sandrunners (roughly equivalent to IG Rough Riders, no shooty)
- Convert some Standard Bearers and/or Centurions (Either apply specialisation traits to Convict squads, or exemplify them in a single character)

I've made sure to keep working on the rider for this, as it is very much going to be unique to me. Been a while since we've seen this relic (http://daemonfiregames.blogspot.com/2014/08/diy-chapter-1.html). And now we have a glorious imposing rider atop it for truly put the fear into the enemy.

The choice to go Art Scale was from the fact I didn't like the legs that came with the Jetbike. Sorry @Thantos . Thankfully I had some Terminator legs going spare, and a lust to complete an Art Scale Marine doing something other than standard around or posing. Thats not to say a number of [urlhttp://masteroftheforge.com/2012/10/02/truescale-kharn-finished/]Art Scale[/url] Space Marines (http://the-autoforge.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/truescale-word-bearer-wip-30.html) I've seen don't look good, but in fact the opposite of being very inspirational to make me want to try it myself.

The trickier part is the actual modeling of them.

(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Og9JYNz_lGg/VLbgWxkD4SI/AAAAAAAAAto/-3I-zUHrf_w/s1600/022.JPG)(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-41D4ZaGOOik/VLbgW3CuD6I/AAAAAAAAAtk/NrN7fEJJCiA/s1600/023.JPG)

And to get around that I kinda cheated. I didn't have spare Space Marine arms to hand at the time I was working on this, so I resorted to using some "Shells" I had cast from a shelving peg with a green stuff missile tip molded on.

The result is an increadibly chunky looking piece of armour, and I think once I get some bulk onto the torso, it will look just right.

As an aside, I had difficulty keeping the Rider on his mount, and decided to use a couple 2mm neodyniam magnets I got from Anvil Industry  (http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/Magnets?search=magnet)ages ago. It worked an absolute charm, and when the rider is mounted, it takes a good deal of vicious shaking to get him off the Jetbike.

Current problems are the feet curving off to the sides. I'm not too sure how I could have resolvedthis, but i'm sure with some widening of the foot plate I can make it look decent.

Some Space Wolves I won in a recent eBay auction.

I have a couple reasons why I've started a small Space Wolves force.
#1 I love the fluff of truly vicious space marines with near literal kin ship to wolves. The fluff in the 5th ed codex really gets me going.
#2 I folow the Space Wolves blog (http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.co.uk/), who have some fantastic advice on the subject. They also got me inspired to do more work on my Adepta Sororitas Codex (http://adf.ly/hctFs) for a time. well, until I had to start college anyway.

Its unfortunate that I'm now going to have to weigh up buying the newer Space Wolves codex, but as and when I do I'll be making sure I have a nice colection to complement it.

These are very simple character cards I've made for my Battle Leader and the current only other space wolf models I have which I intend to use as Wolf Guard Pack Leaders. I'm sure a Space Wolf player or two are going to tell me how foolish I am, but oh well. I was mainly going for models with character, rather than squeezing the maximum damage loadout.

I'd like to think that with only a single Space wolf sprue, I made five very distinct character models, who will look perfect leading my squad of Blood Claws and other younger Space Wolf units.

At present I'm not sure what I will include in the force. I think Grey Hunters are going to be a backup, rather than core unit. Or potentially just a character hunter unit to complement Hoggar himself.

I am planning on mainly using the vanilla space marine models with small amounts of Space Wolf gubbins on top, alongside any green stuff work I do. I am wanting to practice my GS work, and I think some Space Wolf fur pelts would be an excellent challenge across mutliple models.

As I said earlier, I still have yet to purchase the next Space Wolf codex, and I am quite curious to how the army has changed. I'm sure the change to wargear is going to have some interesting side effects.

A couple of Fallen Dark Angels I'm slowly putting together with salvaged, new and custom parts.

(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CjqB4z0nV6s/VLbkWHmxRSI/AAAAAAAAAuA/PUMHS-qzHB8/s1600/025.JPG) (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UUpWMSmGt-I/VLbkWwPPxrI/AAAAAAAAAuE/BtH5E4778cc/s1600/026.JPG)

I'm thinking they'll make good stand ins for a Champion and a Heavy Bolter Havoc/Marine.

The robed legs are available from Anvil Industry.

The "Heavy Bolter" was made from a Dark Angel Assault Cannon, with its main barrel chopped off and replace with some plastic tubing I had to hand. I doubt it would be too much of a stretch for the Chaos Marine to have learnt how to use and carry it one handed. I'm probably going to use the pointing arm from the Space Marine Command sprue as his left arm, as thats al I can think of that would look right in this pose.

The Champion just doesn't care for shooting, so has swapped his pistol for a Power Sword. As a side note, the right hand of the Champion is actually a Necron Deathmark trigger hand. In time I will show what madness I have practice in order to have necron parts strewn across my work desk.

This marks the start of a long project I'm gonna start shortly.

Lets be honest, for the content you get, the Dark Vengeance boxset is pretty damn good value for money, even before you take into account the Rulebook, Templates and startup set of dice.
The models are superbly cast, and perfect for any Dark angel or Chaos Player looking to add a touch more umph to their force.
But then there is the trade off for other Power Armoured factions not really having the option to use those same models.
Well I'm gonna document my trails and tribulations as I slowly convert a Dark Angel Tactical Squad into a group of Space Wolf Grey Hunters.
I'm still running on the 5th ed codex, but I'm sure there is enough that has stayed the same that the final unit will still be perfectly legal.
Here are the lucky Marines who shall soon emerge as Hunters in grey.
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3osuR2wQv20/VMQvWivnOoI/AAAAAAAAAuw/7zp2Q4uL7l0/s1600/007.JPG) (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e-arz7vnECU/VMQu-vJf2iI/AAAAAAAAAug/zaiBS201t6c/s1600/008.JPG) (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n1xbqhznvnY/VMQu9s2PXlI/AAAAAAAAAuY/SuWMUvt3L4M/s1600/010.JPG)
Why do Dark Angels have such a rep with Plasma?
First man up to the chopping block will be the Sergeant, who I shall be swapping his hands for a Boltgun and Close Combat Weapon. Luckily i have a Space Wolf Torso free to replace the robed torso that comes with the model. I had orignally thought the Plasma Pistol arm was a bit more free to position, but closer inspection reveals I'm sorta stuck with this awkward pose. Ah well.

First man of my Dark Vengeance Tactical Marine squad to be brought to the knife.

Gotta love all those spare pieces you get from kits like the Space Wolves box.

The Head, Torso, Waist decoration,  Right arm, and Boltgun all came from the leftovers for my Battle Leader and Pack Leaders.

What you may not know is the torso piece for the normal model has been cut away at point to allow a snugger fit with the body. I had to go in with blade and file to get the fit right again with the "Flat neck" torso piece.

Next was deciding what head and position to use. I wanted to make sure that unlike the Dark Vengeance Sergeant, that my Grey Hunter was actually taking aim with his weapon. Command poses are great, but that is what the Pack Leaders are for.

I'm considering adding some fur underneath the waist decoration, mostly to bulk him out in that region, as the original model was deliberately sculpted out for the DV model.
What do you guys think?
Title: Re: Narric's Miniature Modelling & Painting log

Looks good. I agree that the waist seems a little thin, and I didn't immediately realise it was a Space Wolf just from looking at the model (I had to check an older post), so some fur would probably be a good addition.

I have a couple which I'll be adding cloaks to. I think I'll probably add some GS fur to them as well.

The trick with Bolter and chainsword here, is where I should put the pelt. Should I cover up the "Oathpaper" bit I placed under the knives? Or maybe do some sort of arse-apron?
Title: Re: Narric's Miniature Modelling & Painting log

If by arse apron you mean like a cape that goes around the waist rather than the shoulders, then yes, that. I think that could work.

Finally have a model modelled and painted up to show off.

I've searched around with google, and honestly I don't think  I've found anyone who has done a project quite like this.

Really wishing I could find a charger. My Smaller camera doesn't seem to pick up the details all that well.

I present to you the first Necrostartes. The amalgamation of Space Marine Physiology and Necron Technology.

The Tomb Lords were a normal Codex chapter, until a Techmarine started researching the Necron Technology that scatter the chapters home System. The Necro Armour offers the same level of protection as standard Power Armour, but has a small profile, making the marine a bit harder to hit. The Armour also possess reconstructive properties that augment the Marine's normal pain and injury resistance.

Other Necron Tech is still being researched, though subordinate Machanicus are quickly making headway in operating the "Synaptic Disintegrator."

The paintscheme looks a lot better in person. I think I really need to invest in a light box, and find a suitable place for it.

Transistioning Necron Weaponry to represent Marine weaponry has been the hardest part of this, though the weapons I can represent are certainly some of the more lethal variety.

Scouts will also be interesting, though I am thinking of just using normal scouts with a little bit of necron tech for weaponry.

Looking forward to moving on with this project, though I do still have a large amount of models to paintup and finish before I can continue adding to the collection. Compared to my Space Wolves, the Necrostartes uses a lot more different parts more more scources, so is harder to grow steadily.

Time to update my Junkers.

Had a couple sprues sitting around, and with some extra bits floating around I got inspired to produce a Preator to lead my Junkers.

Suikar is like all other Preators, but his personal preference is to not wear the garish parade uniforms his peers wear to the battlefield. What identifies him is the eagle on his back, and the sword in his hands.

The Senate of Ironglass often has issue with some of Suikar's decisions, but his prowess on the battlefield and his charismatic persona save him from their worst punishments. Oftentimes the Senate will simply send his Legion to further and more dangerous battlefields, hoping that Suikar and his supporters will meet a gruesome end.

Amongst the Convicts who make up the bulk portion of Suikar's Legion, he is an inspiring figure. He gives them the thrill  of constant combat, whilst also showing that even a Preator can work outside the bounds of the Ironglass Senates orders. It is under him many convicts turn to becoming Preatorian Guard, hoping to be chosen to be part of his personal cohort.

From a modeling perspective, I used the normal Junker Plastic sprue for the main bulk of parts, and supplemented it with some pieces from Warhammer 40k Kroot and Space Marines. The sword was cut from the hands of an Island of Blood High Elf Lothern Sea Guard Champion. I think it is a good visual que to say this guy is more than just a rank and file Junker. The small knives at his side can work well as spare blades for real close up combat, as a sword that big isn't going to be useful all the time. Not that impressed with the pistol, but it will serve its purpose I'm sure.

I also have some normal Junker models, which I'll be painting as Praetorian Guard to fight alongside the Praetor.

Well damn, I haven't posted in this thread for a year. I guess I've been too preoccupied with MtG and other things XD

Gonna be trying to do the odd single miniature every now and then, whilst also trying to finish the models I already have.

This update has been brought to you by my purchase of Anvil Industries 5th Anniversary miniature, The Blacksmith (http://anvilindustry.co.uk/The-Blacksmith). Though I need help deciding which model to make from the sprue.

My options are:
- Original Blacksmith with uncovered head
- Original Blacksmith with Masked head (Cultist Smith?)
- Warrior Head with Flaming Sword and Shield
- Warrior Head with Hammer and Shield
- Warrior Head with Flaming Sword and Dagger
- Warrior Head with Hammer and Dagger

I was thinking of adjusting the shield arm so it was holding the shield wider, but looking at how much damage I could do to surrounding detail (I haven't done much modeling this past year) I don't feel like risking it.

I ended up settling for a chaos warrior look, so flaming sword, mask and shield.

Overall feeling pretty good getting back into modelling and painting again.

I have an idea for my next project until I can get a proper wargame mini, repainting these guys:

OOOooOO I like that chaos warrior looking dude. He looks very gladiator-ish.

I would suggest one thing tho. I would paint the flames on the sword a bit brighter, because at first look i thought that the sword had a jagged edge rather than flame. Now this could be a photo thing making the flames look darker than they actually are.

good stuff tho

I like to think he's still a Blacksmith, but his village is under attack, and he is fed up with it, so he's just strolling up to the raiders to kick ass :3

Working with limited colours for fire. I have some bright yellowish paints, so I'll be highlighting with those.

Thanks for the feedback  ;D

http://sta.sh/02jx345xoyh

Pulse Mechs have 10" regular movement and 16" at a run. they're durable with toughness 12. The base Mag Carbine weapon (A paired weapon system) has 24" range, and two shots, and deals an decent 6damage per hurt. These can be replaced with a Frag Rifle, for an additional shot, and an increased range.
The unit can be upgraded with a flight pack, granting "Flight", though sacrificing being hidden the turn its used.

I'm thinking my collection for PCR is going to start off with a Mech force, which is surprisingly expensive for the number of bodies you get on the field. For that I need another eight Pulse Mechs, and then twelve Republic Exo-Mechs.

Considering the number of hobby miniatures and kits I have in possession, you'd think I'd keep this thread going better.

This up date is for my home brew Space Marines, The Tomb Lords. The chapter who ransack and utilise Necron technology. Over the decades since the chapters inception and ultimate excommunication from the Imperium.

I was going for a Captain/Chapter Master who would be instantly identifable to players as significant. Also I really like poses which show more movement, especially in normally static space marines builds.

Sadly a few of the paints I used in the past are now dried out, and I think beyond adding water to revive considering how many times I already watered them down to revive in the past.

The paint scheme will be similar to the painted dude from this old photo from when I first started this chapter idea.

Have found and thinking of joining a local warhammer group at my regular LGS. Haven't been before mainly because they run their events on thursday nights, whereas I'm playing Magic on Fridays.

From what I understand its a group that are fairly experienced in all three game systems; 40K, AoS, and LotR/Hobbit.

I'll be having a game or two with the guy that runs the event, mainly to see how the latest updates to AoS/Fantasy are and to see if I can handle another night away from the missus.

To this end, I've cracked out my Dwarves. Some are some Multipart figures, but I also have a full Battle for Skull Pass box set thats been sitting by basecoated for ages now, so what better excuse to paint them up.

At the moment, I'm running on the idea of a basic gunline formation with some Warriors for backup and flank protection. My Lord is going to be a standard Thane, or whatever they're called now on these warscrolls.

Currently looking at two groups of 18 Thunderers, which will flank a standard cannon & crew. I have some Greataxe Weilding warriors, and some Axe & Shield Warriors as well.

Sadly without stripping a whole load of models, I'm not gonna have a consistent paint scheme over the models. I think these dwarves are among the longest kept minis I've got.

Check out my video for this model here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdGF4T-Xc2E

As insane as it sounds, I am indeed trying to return to my Wargaming Addiction, but more moderated now. I've pre-planned the armies I'm going to build, and will be scrounging eBay for the best deals to get just what I need for it.

Here is my rendition of Commander Bravestorm, one of The Eight, built to be codex compliant to the 4th edition Tau Empire codex I won.

This was my first experience with the new XV8 kit, and definitely impressed. Plenty of options and spare parts that a customiser like me can enjoy.

Enjoy some additional views of the model I show off at the end of the video above.

As my first foray back into miniature modelling, I'm pleased with the result :3

Seems I should endeavour to keep this up to date, especially considering the images have disappeared. Kind of unsurprising, but would have liked them to have worked still...

I need to figure out a god image hosting soltuion, so for now I'm gonna share some of what I've done in video form:

Eurgh...... Can't use Imgur because it doesn't recognise my phone number for reg -_-

I will figure out a more permanent solution, but as these image links don't have a buttload of code in them, I can only assume they'll stick? ???

I have more recent pics of some models I'm currently painting, so I'll try to share those in a reasonable amount of time.
