D&D 3.5 Gestalt - Need help with character creation.

I will be joining a 2nd level 3.5 D&D gestalt game in a week and a half and I'm wracking my brain trying to come up with a class combination that will allow me to play a completely historically inaccurate Spartan based on Frank Miller's 300. When it comes to pen & paper RPGs D&D is not really my strong point, so the very best idea that I've managed to come up with is mixing an urban barbarian with a scout.

I don't suppose anyone else has any better ideas on which character classes to combine to best play a shirtless fool with a very long pointy stick and a shield? I'm open to any suggestions.

The obvious choice, if you're going to go armour-less, is Monk/something so you can use your Wisdom as an AC bonus.  The something should probably have a primary BAB (so it goes up by 1 every level) such as Fighter, Barbarian, Ranger, or Paladin.  The only issue is that carrying a Shield negates the AC bonus, so you'd probably have to do without (or, have a shield-shaped weapon instead).

I don't know all that much about 300, so I can't really give you many more suggestions than that at this point.
Regards,
MT.

Although, given that you're in Japan now, I suppose that's entirely legit. :shifty:

This is all you really need to know about 300.  :P

The Monk gains a Wisdom bonus to AC but that's about all the class would contribute to the build. Good for a level dip, but not much use unless I switch the focus of the build to producing a nasty monk rather than a half-naked Spartan warrior.

::EDIT:: I'm also considering Rogue instead of Scout, but I don't really know enough about the game to reliably get the sneak attack damage.

I haven't actually opened a 3.5 book in quite some time, I've been all over Pathfinder. I do seem to recall the Skirmisher from... Ultimate Combat, I believe. Basically a light melee class that got bonuses to AC and attacks from mobility. About the most-played Skirmisher build was a barely-armoured bloke with a longspear or spear and shield running back and forth jabbing at things.

Stand on the opposite side of an enemy as another guy :P.

Had a long hard look at the Scout, but in the end I abandoned the idea of playing a campy Spartan warlord when I realised how unkind the 3.5 rules were to spear users. Instead I went with a conjuration specialist wizard/archivist instead. We're using miniatures when in combat so laying down the control spells in the conjuration school is actually rather useful, and the archivist is like a preparatory cleric with a nice class ability buff that rewards you for taking knowledge skills.

We're playing 3.5 because those are the books the DM was left with when his original group split up to literally all corners of United States, and he himself eventually went even further and ended up down here in Australia. Plus him and his wife seem to really dig 3.5 Forgotten Realms for some reason.
