Title: My army is too good, what do I do?
Post by: Deraj on June 10, 2017, 04:35:40 PM
I wasn't sure where to put this topic, but I figure if everyone else is like me and just hit's recently unread topic, it will show up anyway, so let's just jump into things.

Over the years I've seen a lot of people pick armies based on fluff or models or just liking the rules. Then another edition comes along, or a codex, or hell, even game system (here's looking at you age of sigmar and 8th edition) and instead of nerfing your army into unplayability, suddenly you've hit the jackpot. Your random assortment of models that you've spent so many hours building, converting, painting, and loving are now the terror of the board. They're unstoppable. And now you're the cheesiest prick in existence. Some people don't want to play against your army. Some complain behind your back and to your face about how you're the worst powergamer since [insert some Matt Ward joke?] What's the next step? I'll just share my experiences of options and see what you guys have to offer in return:

1: Change armies. I know tau players and grey knight players who have done this one. Thousands of points of well painted armies sold because they get tired of the complaining or the point and click instant wins. Ironically back in 2009 I sold off all my wood elves for ogres because at the time I had a running tally of my w/l/d with wood elves and it was something like 200/3/10. That's not bragging, wood elves were just weird at the time and hard to counter. Ogres were an awful army at the time that nobody cared for, so I got them and they just got better and better until... now I'm that beastclaw raider player who is having the same issue all over again.

2: Embrace it. Play it up. Be a heel. Sometimes you just have to like what you like, and if others complain, so be it. If you're lucky you know other good players who are smart enough to simply counter what you have, as time and familiarity have a way of evening out the playing field.

3: Throw games. I would never advise this, but... you throw some games, even just hold back a little, make some mistakes, just so that people get off your back. Be careful about it, because if you get caught doing it you will hurt feelings, which... it's a game. Who wants that?

So what do you guys think? Do you have thoughts or suggestions about this issue? Stories of your own?

Up until seventh edition, which ended my previously unbroken run of playing every edition since Rogue Trader, I stuck to playing my Eldar.  There were some periods in which they were incredibly powerful, notably second edition, and others where they were less so, but because I played a well balanced army, which rarely included any of the most overpowered combinations, I rarely encountered any problems with others.  Essentially, so long as you are not deliberately constructing a power list, I think that most people are fairly relaxed, even when fighting against a powerful army.
