Plumber took a cautious step toward the timberwolves, hoping to bring a peaceful end to this. He wasn’t sure if timberwolves were sentient, but he intended to try. His movements attracted the attention of the wolves; they didn’t stop growling, but they didn’t advance.
“We -” Plumber began.
He got no further as he was interrupted by a loud crack. A crossbow bolt had slammed into the lead timberwolf, snapping some of the sticks that made up its foreleg. As it howled, the other three leaped forward.
Two of the wolves pounced on Plumber. Desperately he reared into the air, his front hooves kicking to hold them off until he could draw his wrench. He managed to bat one of them away, but the other sank its teeth into Plumber’s right hoof briefly before retreating to avoid having its face stomped into the ground.
Pale ran forward to assist the beleaguered earth pony, swinging his truncheon with magic. Unfortunately the wolves saw it coming and one of them snatched it out of the air like a dog catching a stick.
The third wolf tried to attack Thunder, but the pegasus was able to dart out of the way, spiralling quickly into the air. The timberwolf snarled as its prey escaped beyond its reach.
Abandoning its attempts to reach Thunder, the wolf turned its attention to the fourth pony just in time to see a crossbow bolt heading straight for it. Patent smirked as the bolt smashed the wolf’s head to pieces.
“Aren’t you going to take part in this fight?” Patent yelled contemptuously at Thunder as the wolf fell apart. Thunder responded by swooping round into a dive, Her wings beating furiously as she gained speed. A deafening crack rang through the forest as she pulled of her sonic thunderclap, but she had misjudged her speed and was still several metres in the air at the time. The shockwave was too far away from the wolves to have any effect other than attracting their attention.
Seeing her failure, she tried to slash the injured wolf with her wingblades as she passed. Unfortunately wingblades were designed for speed and finesse rather than chopping wood so they merely glanced off the timberwolf, bruising her wing and throwing her off balance towards a tree. The angry timberwolf sprang after her.
Wincing as his injured hoof slammed back to the ground, Plumber finally managed to pull his wrench from his saddlebag with his mouth. The solid metal wrench swung through the air, smashing the wolf that had bitten him to splinters.
Unable to make pull his truncheon from the wolf’s mouth, Pale Ale tried to buck it. The wolf dodged the kick, still gripping the weapon. Before it could recover Pale reared back and stomped down on the timberwolf breaking it apart.
Twisting skilfully in midair, Thunder didn’t crash. Instead she managed to use the tree as a springboard, slamming into the approaching timberwolf. The blow knocked it to the far edge of the clearing. It got up unsteadily, only to collapse as another crossbow bolt hit it, shattering its already injured leg. Whimpering, it turned and fled into the forest.
