Title: Pathfinder
Post by: The Man They Call Jayne on May 12, 2014, 10:35:29 PM
I am to be starting a Pathfinder game in a couple of weeks, and the rule book is a hell of a thing to get to grips with when you have never played a game like this before.

Anyone have any hints or tips for a new guy?

I am looking at a Dwarven Fighter for my first run. They seem simple yet capable. Plus, Dwarves are cool.

Pathfinder can be a little overwhelming, especially getting new abilities every level. My suggestion is to just read through the rules and don't worry about being buried in the book during gameplay, because someone has to be anyway...

Pathfinder is a decent continuation of dnd 3.5, but I'm just not a fan of the d20 system. It's overly complicated and full of holes, and not particularly inviting to new players.

I've played a Dwarf Ranger in Pathfinder, it took me a little while to get to grips with the rules but fortunately I was playing with some D&D veterans. With a Fighter you'll want to establish what route you want to go down before starting ie. sword and shield, two-handed weapon, archer ect. so you can select the feats you'll want in advance.

With a melee fighter you'd want to put loads of ability points into Strength whilst ignoring Charisma and Intelligence, also I'd suggest investing into the feat 'Power Attack' pretty early on.

I have:

Dwarven Fighter

STR 16
DEX 12
CON 18
INT 10
WIS 12
CHA 8

Feats:
Power Attack
Weapon Focus (Dwarven Waraxe)

Traits:
Armour Expert
Dirty Fighter

Scalemail Armour
Heavy Wooden Shield
Dwarven Waraxe
Composite Short Bow (20 arrows)
Throwing Axes x2

I am going to go down the Sword and Board route, as our other Fighter is going to work towards 2 handed weapons, and me following him is redundant, so I am basicly going to be the tank and focus on sucking up damage and dishing it out where I can.
