Title: Will's Motivation/Painting Plog
Post by: Will's on Fire on June 26, 2011, 03:12:01 PM
Just a quick update for this week. After exams ended, somehow the week got more stressful. ::)

Finally got the rest of the sprues, and sprayed them white.

Spent this afternoon painting over the crappy white spray in various different colours... anything that needed to end up green, with black, stuff that wanted to end up white with grey, and the metallic areas with grey.

No pictures as showing you a few pictures of some white pieces is pretty pointless, especially as the spray was so bad, that it didn't even manage to cover the pieces properly... instead it just dripped paint out of the can a lot of the time. Not the best spray I've ever used. :P

Hopefully I will get some work done and show some WIP sometime this week.

Started painting a unit of Great Weapon Dwarfs (Mantic conversions) and have got 4 in progress. Will hopefully get some pics of them as well.

Well you both know I can't hope to offer you painting techniques, it's why your painting my models in the first place  ;) But I'm proud to say that I'll have that on table soon  ;D Love the paint job on the legs especially.. They look properly worn in, like a Dreadnought not quite factory fresh, ne thats gone out and stuck it's foot in some Choas scum like it was made to. So as always I'm an ignorant fan, but an appreciative one  :P

Nice!

How did you find the mantic models took the paint? Easy to work with?

Easy to work with as they have very few parts.

Lack of posing is a shame, and they are bigger and bulkier than GW Dawrfs, so don't blend in very well. You can't use them to bulk out a GW unit.

And thanks :)

Hopefully Kara Sloan is on the way! :)

I love this Astorath that you've done! I'm not fussed on the jump pack, but that's not your fault, that's just the way it was made. I particularly like the axe and the purity seals on the model.

I've ended up playing around with the axe, as I wasn't quite happy with the results, however, I won't be posting any new pics of it yet, not completely happy with it still...

I don't like that model. I love your paint job on it. I hate the actual sculpt.

It's not a bad sculpt, but I think the idea behind it, with the balancing on scrolls.

Anyway, some more pictures, this time close ups.

SPOT THE MISTAKES (There will probably be some that I haven't noticed)

Currently, I am doing some more work to the wings, as someone pointed out to me, they though the highlights were too wide, so I am reducing that, and trying to add some more blends.

Tried to add the lighting onto the cloak and did a bit more touching up.

What do you think of it?

I'm not sold on it, but I don't think it looks awful...

I think my biggest problem with the Astroth model is to me, it looks like a chaos character. :shrugs:

I like Hellbrecht. Looks great. Nice work on the source lighting.

Hmm, yes, all the skulls, I can see your point. I don't collect BAngels though, not my problem. :P

I've been silent for a while, but now is time for a new picture!

Unfortunately there is only one new picture thanks to rechargeable batteries messing me around again... Should get some more pictures soon.

So, here is chaplain cassius WIP:

What do you think so far? Any obvious mistakes?

As for the rest of my vow, the bikers bases are done, just need to finish this guy. :D

I agree with you there SILK, I think he'd look much better with the new shape jump packs like on Astorath and The Sanguinor.

I do however, have a question for anyone who reads it, I have the sanguinary priest pretty much finished now, and am doing the gems. I have come across a problem. As I'm painting BAngels I would normally immediately paint all the gems red, however, as I have done this quartered scheme, the red gems just don't stand out. So my question is this, should I paint the gems on the white area red, as usual and then paint the gems on the red areas green, as that creates nice contrast, like on Astorath with the purity seals? Or should I paint them all green?

Hopefully I'll get some pictures soon, but light isn't great and it has snowed... I normally take pictures in a conservatory and the roof is covered in snow. See my problem? :P

Good stuff on Dante, your transitions are getting smoother with each model :)

As for gems, I'd go with one colour all over, I think splitting the colour of them would look a bit odd.

The colour to use depends what shade of red and green you've used, if it's quite a blue green and purple-red, amber might work nicely.

I think the new pics are much better, as the old ones were just too dark to see any details. I especially like the highlighting on the gold.

For the gems I'd go with the green to give a contrast but to be consistant among your army.

Well, it would appear my old project log got eaten. I then posted a thread in the showcase called "Will's painting update" and that seems to have been eaten as well. So I might as well try all over again.

As most people know I'm currently working on my Sanguinary Guard army, I have 4 models done of the first full squad I'm painting. I also have Dante and a Priest painted.

So, my latest model:

What do you guys think?

Hopefully I'll update every week or so, next up will be working on a chapter banner.

Think of it as a spring clean of the old logs?  ??? maybe ... lol

Hope this one doesnt get eaten too! Looking great, as i mentioned before, unique style of blending - he going to have lighter brighter eyes?

What do you guys think?

The blending isn't something I am convinced by on the red or the white. I'm quite happy with the purple though. Also I'm going to be having some fun painting the intricate details, my fine detail brush is kinda screwed and my next brush size up is way to big. Should be fun! :P

Update:

Some more painting done.

I painted the scrolls, and started on the skin. The picture make the skin on the right (as you look at it) look a mess, so that needs some changing. Also, the face needs some work done, I just painted on the lightest coat and am going to wash backwards, because my brush isn't small enough to highlight to usual way.

I think my favourite brush might need replacing, it never had a point to start with, I just need to choose how much I want to spend on the new brush, and what type is a good brush:

(http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww220/Will-i-am119/DSCF0221.jpg) :P

And my homemade Wet Palette:

Cheers for looking, comments and criticism very welcome, I want to make this the best banner I've painted.  :D

I am tempted on the back of the banner, to try and paint purple teardrops, I'm mainly saying that here because if I do I force myself to give it a go at somepoint and post some WIP shots of it. :P

Painted the outline part of the banner. I like how it's turned out, in future I need to work on making the transitions smoother, but for my first try using another different method I like how it's come out.

1) I really, really like your painting so far. It's gotten very good, I remember it when I first joined...

2) Your non-metallic metal is also getting very good.

3) With such wonderfully painted models, it seems such a shame that the bases look so plain. What are your plans for them?

Yeah, a bit of an improvement. :D

Thanks!

I am intending to buy resin cast bases for all the models in this army. It's between these ones (http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=1266#i/podstawki_round/big/spartan_base_25mm_r_set1_01.jpg) or these ones (http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=1021) at the moment. I'm torn between the two at the moment. What do you think?

Oh, I much, much prefer the Egyptian bases. But a few of the others scattered through the army would be good, surely? So, ultimately, why not both?

The more I think about it, the more I lean towards the Egyptian bases. They are cheaper to buy (in total), then I think I'm going to have 3 of the raised ones for the Sanguinary Priests. Then I might get 40mm bases for Dante and The Sanguinor.

More WIP, I have done some more shading, trying to add more contrast. I've then also done some work on the NMM metal for the actual banner top.

Unsurprisingly, more WIP.

This time I've finished the NMM of the bannerpoles, although a couple of bits need a bit of repainting I think, will be interesting to if you agree. I also painted in the gems on the banner, I hope you like them!

I think you can now see the banner really coming together, and I'm really happy with it. A little bit more painting and I'll have to start on the actual guy. Oh and yes, I did knock off his sword arm. :shifty:

What do you think?

Cheers guys!

I'm currently still trying to finish the back of the banner, I couldn't get it to work, and have put it to one side for the moment as I'm finishing another project which I'm hoping to enter into a comp and therefore am not showing WIP pictures for. I am however taking some so I might put up a stage by stage showing how it progressed afterwards depending on whether I get round to it or not.

For now however, I have started another project. My aims for this one is to improve my blending of robes, maybe add some cool effect on the back of one of them, but that depends very much is how well it goes to whether it survives or not. I am also hoping to try out some source lighting. :D

Without further ado, some pictures:

First up, my celestial wizard.

I would've liked to have painted this guy in pieces, but I bought it second hand and it was made up. Obviously the big wad of blu tack beneath his star gazer (I like that description better than telescope. :P ) won't be there once it's fully done. I am also going to be sorting out those lollipop sticks into the bottom of the base. Also his staff is broken I have the top, and will glue it back on at some point.

Secondly my Death wizard:

One his first base:

His second gaming base:

I can see from the picture there's a mould line I need to clean up  on his hand and maybe a couple of others I missed. Again, I would like to be painting in parts but it was second hand. My plan for the first base is to have the piece of ground in front of him glowing and this will glow onto the robes, this is why on the second base there is the candles, these will hopefully glow and add light in a similar way to also look cool with this source lighting. He is transferable via a pin in his foot allowing him to be swapped between bases.

So, what do you think?

I'm hoping to get back onto my sang guard soon, whether it will be before or after these wizards I'm not sure.

Here is the result:

Done some work on my lore of death empire wizard:

(I think some more work is required on the green runes, I want them to be a bit more stand out. Oh and I massively cocked up the writing so I kinda made it messy, not sure how well that works...)

And finally on the base:

Wow, really like the detail of the book cover and the detail on the face.  Really looks like he's focused on the book and the book wear looks really good.  Have you considered maybe putting a title onto the book?

If I had to make a small criticism it would be the inside of the book... looks very random although it could be the look that you're going for... but it seems like a finger painting.  I always like to see symbols intermittant with some regular text... but other then that I am definitely liking the look of that guy.

Banner for the Sanguinary Guard is great, really like it.  Can't wait to see the painted guy complete.  Nicely done.

Thank you for the reply!

Yeah, I agree the book was rubbish, I am probably going to redo the left hand page because the writing effect I was going for just didn't work, the paint was a bit too thin so it just 'blobbed' and didn't work. A title is a really nice idea, I will definitely consider it, and if I can get my brush controlled enough give it a go.

Some more progress on the wizard:

And one of his two bases, this one is the right size for gaming:

What do you think?

Just need to add the lighting to the cloak now and I'll be getting close to finished!

Chest or leg? I'm tempted to have it as two separate, but not sure if that'll make it look a bit naff and as if I got the mix wrong on one of them...

Title: Re: Will's Motivation/Painting Plog
Post by: Tom on August 10, 2012, 12:44:04 PM
I think I like the chest more but it's difficult to tell because the wings on the chest takes up so much space. The flat areas on the legs don't look quite right. The front of the banner looks excellent though, you're improving all the time.
Title: Re: Will's Motivation/Painting Plog
Post by: Will's on Fire on August 10, 2012, 04:53:49 PM
Cheers for the reply!

I think I agree that the chest is a better end result, I think I made the legs too orange. I wish I'd bought a snakebite leather pot before the changeover of paints, rather than trying to create the snakebite from bestial each time. :S

I've really struggled with the flat areas on the legs all the way through, they're a bitch to try and work out where to highlight. I think I need to change it to a single highlight through the centre of the leg rather than the two highlights. I think I'll start the repainting tomorrow.

So today I sat down and I tried to paint the other leg in the method I used for the chest, just to remind myself of the method. I couldn't get it quite how I wanted, so I changed it around and tried something, and I think the end result is quite solid.

Be brutally honest, would you still prefer the other method or has this changed your mind?

But for now, I have some different stuff. I based my ork warbikers:

Then, I bought an Ork Bomber. Made it fully swappable between the 3 variants, without too much work at all. Still hoping to one day get my hands on some magnets and do all this properly.

Anyway, heres the pieces I haven't started on:

And here are the ones I have:

And the exhaust:

Think I'm going to do some heavy washing of the metals on the exhaust, but for now I;m going to leave i and see how I want to do the rest of the metallics. And yes, that blur in the last photo is another project of mine that needs to be started. :P

One question, does anyone have any idea what would make a good base for an Ork Blitza-Dakka-Bomba?

Gretchin Gunner:

Bits and pieces for putting on wings and front:

And then what I came up with for the base:

Very nice, I always build vehicles before painting them. Would you say it's easier to paint them in sections?
Title: Re: Will's Motivation/Painting Plog
Post by: Will's on Fire on September 14, 2012, 10:22:30 AM
I like painting it in sections, with a kit like this as it's just smaller to hold. The wings would be a nightmare if they were joined to the body as they would just be too wide to hold comfortably whilst painting.

Other parts are in pieces because I am making it fully swappable between all three versions of the jet, so the guns will all be removable, along with the piece that allows for the grot gunner part to be put in, the big shoota is then swappable between the two options for the gunner, Twin linked or normal. Took a bit of thought in places but for the most part was quite easy to have swappable. Would like however to be using magnets for it, but don't have any so for now it will be by the power of blu-tack.

Cheers Thantos, I certainly hope so!

So, I'm going to uni tomorrow, and therefore won't have access to the family's camera. Therefore I this will be having less posts from me in it. Unless I can find someone doing photography with a good camera in my halls. xD

I still need to finish the body of the plane, that's why currently it's matte black. I'll be adding in some more freehand symbols along the top, some more checks and the mushroom symbol which will be put on the piece just in front of the tail fin. This is the model at the moment in the dakkajet configuration.

And what's left apart form the body to paint:

Time to do some necromancing. :P

Well, after a while at uni I'm home. Done a bit of painting so here's some pictures. Hopefully the pictures have come out okay...

Dark Elf Sorceress ready to be the Drow Sorceress from a DnD campaign. The hair is the reason she has the name Niceda Bloodrose.

Then an Empire Witch hunter, who is also for the DnD campaign.

And then finally I bought Dark Vengeance, so here is my start on the cultists.

So, what do you think?

I have a celestial wizard to get pictures of, and the cultists I've been working on, then you'll be up to date on my painting. :P

Okay, so I'm back with more pictures.

Celectial wizard, which I tried to make the planet look a bit like jupiter, not sure how it worked though. Went for a scheme a bit different to the typical Celestial wizard.

Great progress mate, I especially love the Wizard- the NMM on his staff looks the goods, and the 'Jupiter' planet is very convincing.

And I love the DW Terminator, although to be honest im still trying to process the grey-to-bone-to-white scheme. Dont get me wrong, it looks cool (and is similar to what Eavy Metal did for theirs?) its just that I have 5 DW squads painted in the old style- really dark brown for the recesses, so my brain is struggling- 'does not compute' lol.

Speaking of, just caught a glimpse of the new DA Codex and some of the minis... insane.

Love your "high contrast" style with these minis. Can really see the progress in this ongoing log! I need to practise getting more contrast to my minis, jealous you have nailed it.

All great apart from IMO the deathwing termi looks a little too harsh with the black to bone armour. Needs a softer transition i think.

Good luck with the D+D!

Cheers guys!

I was painting them, black --> +Balor Brown (Snakebite-ish) --> Bleached Bone --> Bleached bone and white. Didn't use any greys. :P

Yep, it's the leaving the blends there that I struggle with. especially on marines. I should probably stick to applying the blends I use for  NMM to the amrour, and that would leave me with way nicer transitions. That will have to come on future marines. I'm aiming for decent tabletop standard, and so at a distant the armour looks fine. Finished the power sword a day or two ago as well. Tried a new method compared to the Sanguinary Guard, and I might carry this method back over as I like the result.

I know the sword has not come out as well as it could have done, in future when I try this effect again, I will make sure that the earlier highlights, when you start forming the shape of the lightning need to be fairly wide, so that as the highlight becomes brighter, you should still have some of the previous layer.

He looks very good, I think, though I can see that you're just like me with blending/layers and Space Marines... I always wind up lightning up about every plate and then I am like: 'hell, where's my shades aside from the recesses?'  :facepalm001:

I like how smooth and pure you managed to get the Bleached Bone - you must tell me how you did that! I've been layering on 4-5 layers now on one of my SM (over light grey primer) and it's still showing through. Bah.

You could always give him a bit more Bleached Bone/White  50:50 and 25:75 highlights. Although they might just be lost on the picture against the white background behind him. :)

Yes, it's that time again, I'm back from uni so I'll be painting and taking pictures and posting them. So here goes on my progress for the term:

Full terminator squad down:

A closer look at the assault cannon:

I think I need to smooth the blend on the assault cannon a bit, but overall I'm happy with it being a tabletop standard model.

Another biker:

As always, what do you think?

Separate to the pictures, I've decided to start a deathwing army, just for the cool paint scheme, so eventually I'll be churning out more bone armour. So far I have a command squad, a deathwing knight squad and this terminator squad.

I'm still working through the Dark vengeance models, hoping to sell the chaos once I finish painting them, so far I've only got 10 cultists done, but they shouldn't take too long to finish up. The rest however will take longer.

As for my Sanguinary Guard I'm still painting them up slowly, got another about half way done at the moment, will post pictures up once the lighting improves enough for me to get good pictures that will actually look like the colours they are. I've also changed my colour palette for NMM gold again, so although this one is an improvement I feel, the next one will be using my newest method which I feel is the best so far. At least, best on small areas. I still find that the smaller areas are much easier to paint using NMM methods.

I'm also running a D&D campaign with a mate, and will soon be doing writing for my own story arc, so that's going to be exciting, I'm looking forward to my own take on a campaign storyline and generally improving my writing style.

Cheers for reading, hopefully I'll start updating fairly regularly, although uni revision will keep me bogged down!

Thanks Osiris, your paintings pretty good, th emore you paint the better it'll be! :D

Now for the Sanguinary Guard that has been in the works for a while:

I'm quite happy with it, on the tabletop it looks quite cool, but I have a new mix for gold effect, so I think the next one will be trying that. I quite like the sword, but I'm not completely convinced by it.

Cheers for looking. :)

These are looking amazing mate. I dare say that your highlights could use an extra stage overall though, one final colour several shades brighter than those that came before it, but only with very thin brush strokes. Just to make the model pop that little bit more.

Cheers SILK. I agree entirely, thats something I'll be doing with a new method, which I think suits that final brightest highlight.

Just a quick update this time, starting painting the hellbrute from dark vengeance. Going for my take on the box colour so:

Well, it's been a while, but I finally feel like I have some stuff worth posting up in here:

A Blood Angel librarian converted from the Dark Vengeance box set.

And the progress on the hellbrute: Still need to finish the skin on the back. Also, there are a few gaps as it is not glued together.

So yeah, that's what I've been up to, tried some new stuff on the librarian and I'm pretty happy with the result. The are a couple of bits I'd change, but I'll let you guys form your own opinions without me telling you what I don't like.

I'll be getting round to the hellbrute soon I hope, I enjoyed painting him but I made the skin a bit complicated and the back is such a big part I don't want to screw it up.

As always comments and critique very welcome.

Title: Re: Will's Motivation/Painting Plog

Well I'm back... For a bit at least.

Haven't one any painting in a long time, and really want to finish that hellbrute, the skin is taking forever.

But today is for a different idea I've had. I realise that my bases aren't that great, so I've set myself a chellenge. To create 2-4 unit fillers for my dwarfs. Whether I'll use them is a different matter, but I want to work on creating a cool little base. They'll be made to cover 4 20mm bases in a 2x2 formation. I'm considering upping it to 3x2 if there is a lack of space.

Going to be using these along with some other stuff:

(http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww220/Will-i-am119/DSCF3440_zpsf22598dc.jpg) (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/Will-i-am119/media/DSCF3440_zpsf22598dc.jpg.html)

Secondly, as the new dwarf army book has been released and I got back for Easter, I've wanted to do something with my Dwarf army. A Dwarf Lord on Shieldbearers is incredible in game, but I'm not a huge fan of the journey into battle balanced on top of a shield when the two guys underneath have to fight as well...

So, my counts as Dwarf Lord with Shieldbearer:

(http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww220/Will-i-am119/DSCF3437_zps0bbed132.jpg) (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/Will-i-am119/media/DSCF3437_zps0bbed132.jpg.html)
(http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww220/Will-i-am119/DSCF3438_zps46bb6a71.jpg) (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/Will-i-am119/media/DSCF3438_zps46bb6a71.jpg.html)

So yeah, this stuff also just gave me a good reason to finally put in an order with Zealot Mini's and I have to say, they're some really nice models.

Thanks Thantos, and Narric. :) Thantos, you did, thats there necromancer thank you very much. :D

Right, now time for something a bit different. I decided with a bunch of mates to get into Malifaux. wyrd's new plastics have got me interested in their art style and the game seemed like a lot of fun so I purchased the Viktorias crew. I still have Viktoria of Ashes, and Viktoria of Blood and Taelor from the box set to paint, so this is a WIP for the army. I decided to go for a fairly different scheme to the ones I'm used to, and put more effort into the bases. An army is less than 10 guys so it should look good, right? So hopefully the basing for these isn't too over the top but suits. I'm using it as a way of tying the crew together.

So far however I have:

Vanessa my spellslinger, handy in a fight, but more of a support character, although once she gets on the centre line she gets pretty scary. I'm not entirely happy with how she is on her base as you'll see form the side on images.

The Student of Conflict is my crews totem, a little one who helps buff and sometimes hits stuff with her sword. This one I like the front face of the sword, but her skin tone looks like a fake tan incident...

And then finally I have three Ronin. Hard to kill ninja's dressed like, well, just about dressed.

So the first one, I like the areas of red, but there's something about the skin tone and the entire model that to me anyway, makes it look like one of those old plastic action figures... Also, it was a nightmare to glue together. A lot of fiddly pieces!

And I still need to get a picture of the three of them together...

Next things on my list are to finish this crew, and then finish off the chaos lord from dark vengeance which I've started, and the Dark Angels hero guy who is also in WIP. (Pictures may come soon). I also get to look forward to getting some new brushes. I ended up backing the games and gears ichiban brush kickstarter, and so hopefully my pledge will be coming soon and I'm looking forward to playing with those instead of my slightly battered GW ones.

Cheers,

Will

You have a lot of wasted space in the picutres. Cropping it so the border is closer to the model weill help them fit on the page beter, and you'd be able to have them side by side, rather then as a column :)

Paintwork looks great, though I do agree with the fake tan model :P

Would I be close to assume Malifaux is like a High-fantasy setting much like Infinity?

It's more steampunk, pistols, swords and some magic, where as infinity is more futuristic. Very interesting although because of stat cards instead of army books I feel you do miss out on the background a bit, especially as I prefer the mini rulebooks to the big ones.

As for the pictures, I was trying to avoid the pitfall I usually fall into of taking the picture too close up, which always looks worse than it should, cropping would probably help though.
