Title: Action against Ebay Recasters - Named and Shamed Thread
Post by: Thantos on February 01, 2014, 09:27:28 AM
Whats annoying? Those sellers on ebay who list a load of rare and out of production forgeworld miniatures in one go, cast with air bubbles in the wrong colour! Or the seller with 28 listings for Dreadnought Autocannons all conveniently undercoated black...
Stop doing it! Trying to get rich selling dodgy 1 part resin castings devalues everyone's miniatures, pisses off the buyer and makes the recaster money they just dont deserve.

On ebay you can report an item if its counterfeit with the "Report item" to the lower right hand side. Problem is; ebay don't pay attention or do anything unless a certain amount of people report the same item! If one person reports it, its not grounds to remove the item. 10 People? Suddenly worth looking into!

So with the power of community we can stop them! If you spot a sure and blatant recaster on ebay, post here with item details. If other members agree with you that its a recast, they can report the item too and we can do something about people selling junk to the masses! :D

What should the report be though Thantos?

I assume "Listing Practices" but what then for the other two drop options?

A note everyone is to make the written reason more than just "Bubbles and Resin colour." It needs to sound real.

I agree. Getting a vendor shot down because of some bubbles, hardly seems fair.

Just don't buy from them if you don't like them.

You may have misunderstood CG, its not just some minis cast with a few bubbles.

From the perspective of someone selling miniatures, if someone else were to take my sculpts and cast them and sell them themselves, as some sellers on ebay are doing- casting and selling FW stuff, deceiving people into thinking its an original model: Id be furious. (http://forum-of-doom.com/Smileys/default/bash.gif)

Not only is it making copies of someones work, losing that person business and trade and deceiving the buyer. But its a breach of copyright, counterfeiting goods and against the law.

To make a parallel; you are an artist and have started selling prints of your paintings to make money. And then someone scans in your prints and starts printing and selling their own lower quality versions of your work and calls them original?

This is in fact a problem on art sites like DeviantART. There was a website last year that did near exactly that. They downloaded the highest resolution of the image, and then sold the prints.

Most times these art pieces were either commission works, or pieces that the artists themselves had put up for prints.

Though I dislike GW and hope they lose a fair amount of clout so smaller Wargames & miniatures companies can grow above them I do not think it fair that their products be copied so blatantly and sold for profit.
