I cannot see either my avatar or the "New Replies" and "Unread Topics" buttons.

Have you tried emptying your browser cache? At a minimum try using F5 to refresh your browser whilst on 2S.

Although I have the ability to selectively apply updates to users or IP ranges, I haven't done so. In fact I've not logged directly into the server for a week or two.

I don't see a triangle anywhere. Except in the Simplemachines logo.

Ahh, I have a little chevron up there, all fixed now. Spot on :)
Ah yes, that can hide that section. It can be useful sometimes.
