Title: Adverts
Post by: Chris on June 09, 2014, 08:27:18 PM
Hey guys...
Has anyone else found that adverts seem to keep appearing on the site... popups when you hover the mouse over an area? Very perculiar as this hasn't happened before...

I have Adblock, so I wouldn't know...

I haven't found anything like that and I don't run adblock or anything like that.

It seems to be my anti-virus... I'm running AVG free, I'm gunna get Avast too now and see if that will take the issue out...

I'm on Firefox and use AdBlock Plus. I've not experienced what you are.

take a screenshot, and make a note of which areas are having the pop-up, if indeed there is any rhyme or reason to it.

It seems there is no method to it, they just open new pages at times (sometimes when I click, others when I'm not doing anything) its crafty as it tries to get me to download a new version of Firefox...

I've just updated my free AVG and running it to see if that counters it...
I hate viruses...

We don't host any advertisements on the 2S domains or anywhere else on this server as far as I know. There are also no popups except for the PM received popup, the smiley windows popup (requires clicking the button which says "More Smileys" or something to that effect on the post form) and, if you are detected as a mobile device, Tapatalk often shows a "Use the Tapatalk app" notice. I can't think of anything else which should popup.

It wouldn't happen to be for some sort of MMORPG featuring predominantly female player characters would it? I had that for a while and is the reason I have AB+ IT didn't come up as a virus, but anything that blocks ads will get rid of it.

Using an adblocker may be an option anyway, especially one that'll allow you to decide which sites allowed ads and pop-ups.

Sounds like you may have some malware or something that has sneaked through your anti-virus defences Chris.  A screen shot would definitely help.  Alternatively, you could run a google search describing the download issue, and see if it has been reported anywhere.

If it is what I have seen on places, it is just a word in a sentence that is blue with 2 underlines. You hover over it and it shows you something relating to that word.

We do not have anything to that effect on 2S.

It not that... It just randomly opens windows at seeming random times....
Its irritating, but not a massive issue as I'm aware so far, I'll see if one of my tech savy mates can do something with it...

And I'm afraid @Narric you're on your own when it comes to those games... I don't play MMORPGs

Thouht I'd ask, as I had an issue with an ad for a game regularly pop-up without input from me. Thought I'd ask incase you were having the same issue. It certainly sounds the same with the opening windows/tabs by itself part.

If the advert opened windows, it may be the same then... But due to internet at uni, it keeps pinging up as blocked addresses....

That definitely sounds like malware.  I had to get rid of some once using a free program I found online, but it was a very long time ago, and I can't recall what it was.  Keep looking around to see if you can find out more information.
