Title: Fhanados' Word Bearers Log
Post by: Fhanados on October 23, 2012, 05:09:10 AM
A long long long time ago I started a Word Bearers log. Then I did nothing, despite Chaos Space Marines being my most active army. Well the new Codex has sparked my interest anew, and so I have completed the first of what will hopefully be many of my Word Bearers. So without further ado, I present to you the first four totally completed  and based models in the history of me gaming EVER!

Word Bearers Berzerkers!

Sorry if the formatting is off, I'm at work and everything looks out of whack.

Second Entry:
Got 4 boltgun Chaos Marines, 3 Meltas, a Power Fist Champ and Undivided Icon carrier (probably never going to be fielded, but I wanted to have a pretty icon!) and 2 bolt pistol/CCW marines. Enjoy!

I apologise for photo quality, these were all taken on my somewhat horrible phone and the glossy finish likes to reflect flash.

Nice chaos marines! ;D I have a soft spot for WBs after playing the old GW pc game Chaos Gate :P
Could use a coat of matt varnish i think. I use W+N acrlyic matt varnish, its paint on so no chance to ruin your minis like some sprays, although some people have good sprays they use - iver never found a flawless one.

Thanks for the praise! I'm not the best painter so I cheated a bit using the Basecoat>Detail>Drybrush>Quickshade method. Looking at these photos I can see where I need to improve, so hopefully my next batch will be even better!

I actually quite like the shininess of them. It makes them feel finished (despite not having done the bases yet).

My original CSM army was Night Lords, but being painted about 10 years ago they look somewhat poor in comparison to... well anything really. Up close you can tell which ones have been repainted pretty obviously.

I originally started Word Bearers with the intention of team gaming with my friend who played Daemons, but since he stopped playing I've been soloing it with a largely infantry based army, which suffered pretty bad losses in 5th.

I'm really looking forwards to exploring the options the new codex has, particularly Cultists and Dark Apostles and perhaps even Possessed now that they're not as aweful as before.

Anyway stay tuned over the weekend for more updates!

Lovin the shineyness, I actually painted up a bunch of Black Templars years ago and hit them with the gloss varnish- it made ther black of thier armour look very new, like they'd been prepared in readiness for a parade or special occasion.

Although in your case I think it conveys a sense of slimey evilness!!

Good job! I like those shoulder pads! I agree with Tempest, the shine does add a slimey evil feel. It goes well with the mutations.

Just for a possible area to improve, to me there almost seems to be a little too much wash or varnish involved that it makes it hard to see the edge highlights you did. If you did the edge highlights before you hit the model with wash maybe try to instead wash it before applying the highlights. Also if you haven't done this try watering down the wash a little on your next go and see if you like that result better. Worst case scenario is you prefer using pure wash and you'll just hit it with pure wash again after they dry from the watered down coat.

Is there any way to see a big group shot of the bunch?  ;D

Thanks for the comments!

I'm still perfecting the amount of Quickshade I need to use. Some of my models have blobby areas from where it pools and drips. It makes for a nice slime covered effect but it's not something I want on all my models.

There's not much edge highlighting on any of the models. A few have some drybrushed orange on their face and hands to make the features stand out a bit, but other than that I've been pretty lazy.

My next batch has a bit more effort put into it and should be up either tonight (Aussie time) or tomorrow afternoon depending on how ruined my back is.

I have a tourney on Saturday so group shots will be then!

Well this was a weekend of disappointment. I didn't shake the quickshade enough so there was no pigment in it when I washed my models. I did it at midnight the night before my tournament and didn't notice, so now I have a bunch of shiny basecoats that paint won't stick to.

I also didn't paint nearly enough to get my army past the minimum 20% painted point, so I had to take Necron allies.

I then proceeded to come dead last in the tourney, spectacularly losing to all three opponents, one of which was the organiser/store owner. I did have a lot of fun in my first and last game, and the organiser was very helpful and offered lots of advice during our game (despite him still steamrolling me). But I digress, I'll be making a new post about my tourney experience later.

Project wise - I don't know how to recover these. I really don't want to strip them and start anew, and I don't even know if that's going to be possible without ruining the plastic models. Paint doesn't stick well to the gloss coat, and the thickness of it has smoothed out a lot of the detail anyway. I'll try to recover from this catastrophe today after work and then I'll post the results.

Double post and threadromancy!

So over the past 2 months I've slowly been fixing up my failures. Another coat of properly shaken Quickshade had about the same effect as I expected - It didn't adhere too well to the minis and I got a few blobs/drops that I didn't notice until too late.

I think they still turned out OK though, especially now they're based. The Berzerkers look much nicer I think, which sucks because now they're elites I won't be using them :(.

Pics will follow once I get my hands on a camera.

I bought some more marines and an Aegis Defense Line and now have a new batch of painting goals.

Update!

I have now assembled the following:

I'm snooping around my locals to see if anyone is planning on getting the fancy Deathwing terminators, I want some hooded heads for my Champs. Might actually get some myself to expand on my Fallen contingent, but really I have more terminators stockpiled than anyone in their right mind would field!
I'm still lacking in a reliable camera (my phone camera is stuffed) but I'll get some pics up whenever I can.

Show more Pictures D:

Your models look good. Very shiny. Have you had chance to play a few games? I find it helps get a better feel of the army, becuase then you can make adjustments for later on.

Sorry to hear your Tourney experience wasnt the best- dont be too worried, 6th edition is still fairly new, and with a new army these things are bound to happen.

Re: nothing sticking to your minis- if all else fails, simple green concentrate will strip em back to the plastic without hurting the minis- a week submerged and the paint will basically fall off . I know you wont want to (seeing how much painting you've done!) but at least you know you wont have to buy new models!

Thanks for the kind words guys!

The CSM squads weren't a total failure, they still look tabletop quality which is all I'm really aiming for. Just a bit disappointed with how they turned out in comparison to my Berserkers.

As for the tourney, I really only had 1 bad game. Even though I got thoroughly thrashed I still had fun. Before we went in to it me and my IG friend decided on having non-optimal lists to throw people off a bit. If I wanted to be more competitive I would have run my Necron warrior horde and nightscythes.

I've pretty much finished the quadgun now, and I've got to say that it is one of the worst kits I've ever worked with for mould lines! It took me well over an hour of trying to neaten it up and in the end I got the shits and just glued the damn thing together!

I have 4 days to assemble the remainder of my 2000pt army, which will be 4 havocs w/ AC, 2 havocs w/ Lascannon, 1 havoc w/ Missile Launcher, forge/maulerfiend (haven't decided on what I want it to do yet) and my Abaddon conversion.

I'm really excited for the escalation campaign this weekend! If anyone will be participating in the Cando Incident in Sydney GW on Saturday, keep a look out for me and say hi!

Hoping I can get some pics with my video camera and then I'll post em.

Hm, I think the shiny quite works for the Word Bearers! I've been tacking on some of the shiny for one of my Inquisitors and 'his' Grey Knights, amid a bunch of grubby dull Imperial Guard, and it works miracles in underlining their self-inflated egos, hehe.

On the Word Bearers it somehow looks evil, and a bit slimey. I rather like it!
I am sorry to hear your tournee went south though :(

It has been a long time since I've updated my plog, mostly due to a terrible camera. With an upcoming tournament my painting frenzy is underway as I test a new way of cheating... I mean airbrushing... The basic technique is inspired by this amazing fellow here: http://www.denofimagination.com.pl/2012/11/how-to-paint-khorne-space-marines.html

My brown seems a bit green, and I used waaaay too much on the terminators (painting in a dark garage is a good way to waste paint) and prompty ran out of paint before I could finish undercoating the lot. Here's a peek at what I'm working on!

Rank and file Terminators

Cultists

Rhinos and Vindicator

DV Chosen, AKA Aspiring Champions
(http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i48/Zenith_XS/chosen_zps1f9417ad.jpg)

I've also got a bunch of other stuff in various states of disrepair/half painted and will upload them as I go. I seem to have an absurd amount of powerfist equipped models, none of which I will be using in 6th. So yeah... that's depressing...

I intend on getting another DV set of Chosen and butchering them with Warp Talon lightning claws to have a bunch of single-claw armed Champs, which seems to be the way to go from my reckoning.

I've also got a bunch of loicloths and robed legs coming in from Anvil Industries, and 6 obliterator equivalents from Hi-Tech Minis sitting on the shelf. Really really sexy minis, but with MASSIVE hunks of resin that I haven't got around to sawing off. It also blows chunks that I can't use them at any of the tourneys I sign up for since they're all GW events, so in the end I'll probably get a set of 3 GW oblits to keep them happy and mix things up.

More stuff as it comes!

It's been a while but I'm slowly making progress. I've coated my "browned" models with the red. The outcome was not as I had hoped, the brown was far too light, but it did make the red a bit of a better shade than if I put red straight on to plastic, so it wasn't a complete failure. I also finished up a few "recovery project" marines, stuff that was broken/missing pieces/poorly painted.

The Army - Now with Red!

Finally my army is taking form! Got 2 Rhinos, a Vindicator, Forgefiend, Daemon Prince, 8 Terminators (champs still WIP conversions), all the Chaos Marines from Dark Vengeance, 5 Possessed, a Skull Champion for my Khorne Berserkers and an old metal Plasmagunner.

(http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i48/Zenith_XS/Armyshotred_zps0305d39c.jpg) (http://s69.photobucket.com/user/Zenith_XS/media/Armyshotred_zps0305d39c.jpg.html)

The Troops

We have a standard current ed. plastic Marine with Pistol and Close Combat Weapon, old school Havoc with Lascannon and a Flamer.

The Champ

I know he doesn't have a power pack, but I don't care. The cape just looks cool, and this has always been a favourite model of mine. When I gave him a coat of quickshade however it was a bit more globby than I had expected (had to duck out and didn't check it wasn't pooling at his extremities) and this resulted in part of his base becoming embedded in the end of his cape. It now looks a bit more ratty, with obvious scrape marks and indentations from bits of sand and grit, but overall I'm still happy with it.

Thanks for the comments guys! Stuff like this keeps me motivated to keep on going.

The red is vallejo air colours. Undercoat of Earth Brown followed by Fire Red (Rojo Feugo I think). The flash makes it much brighter in the pic than it actually is. Some of my earlier posts have pics with a better indication of what colour it actually is.

I'm currently Dettol-ing a bunch of second hand broken and poorly painted Chaos Marines as part of my recovery project. Although it gets messy, I find Dettol has worked better for me than any other recommendations I've seen online for stripping plastic and it works fine on metal too. My bookshelf looks like a lab of some sort with jars of strange liquid filled with specimens  ;D.

Probably won't get much done in the immediate future with a new job, wedding and moving home yet again, but I'll post when I do.

Small update: I've started working on my "Veterans", Chaos Marines with the whole shebang. Veterans of the Long War, Bolter, Bolt Pistol, Close Combat Weapons, tooled champ and special weapons.

They're a combination of Anvil Industries' robed legs (http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=77_96&product_id=133), standard CSM torsos, Iron Warriors heads, the sheathed swords from the Khorne Berserker kit and Black Templar boltguns.

The robed legs from Anvil Industry are a tad small and don't fit flush with the CSM torsos, but I filled it with liquid Greenstuff, let it dry, pulled them apart and superglued them. Now it's fine. They actually look really good. And the pistol holsters from the CSM kit fit on nice and flush, even though some have kind of an awkward positioning. I'm very happy with how they turned out.

The Chaos Space Marines sprues must be pretty ancient, because everything had a lot of flash, nothing fit together well and it looks like the rear torso bits aren't even designed to match with the fronts. I had the same problem with my last batch of CSM but figured it was a bad casting, which I've become accustomed to dealing with when I used to play Dark Eldar before their makeover. Pretty disappointing for such a core army to have such old, ill fitting models. I never had this problem with basic Space Marines kits.

The Templar upgrade sprue had a similar problem. I also had issues fitting the arms to the Chaos  torsos because of all the extra bling they have on the front. It seems that Templar like to hug their guns, so a little cutting filing and repositioning was required. For the most part it worked out ok, but one or two have a pretty flimsy join.

The Iron Warriors upgrade kit was a pleasant surprise. I thought that an old old old metal upgrade kit would have horrible mould lines, cast slips and poor fitting parts. I was wrong. While the heads are obviously designed to fit with the Iron Warriors torsos (which in retrospect I should have used), liquid greenstuff came to the rescue again! Same strategy; fill, join, break, glue. Perfect. The heads are really really nice, very crusade-era looking which is what I wanted for these guys

I need to order some more backpacks and Word Bearers shoulder pads, and I only have enough Berserker swords for half the squad but they're coming along nicely.

I'm yet to decide on the special weapons, and I would really like an Icon for thematic reasons but taking VotLW and an undivided icon seems foolish. Maybe I'll give them a mark to buff them up a bit more but I don't want to use Nurgle (too mainstream  :shifty:) and all the others are a little underwhelming.

Anyway pics soon, phone ran out of batteries  :P

Ok a quick update:

I got married last month (yay!) which is why I never posted WIP pics of my "Marine Killers" unit. I had a few days free after my honeymoon and done a bit of assembling so I've added the following to my to-paint list:

Cypher - Will count as a Chosen Champion with plasma pistol, bolt pistol and close combat weapon or power sword.
Abbaddon counts-as - Medusa campaign termie lord with the sword and claw. Still trying to work out how a combi-bolter is going to fit in there...)
7x Khorne Berserkers - Part of my salvage mission to repair and repaint a bunch of ruined models I aquired. Two with plasma pistols, one with icon. I'll probably never use them but I like having options available.
Remodelled Khorne Berserker Champion with a plasma pistol.
2x Sorcerers - both with power swords, one with burning brand (flaming possessed marine arm)
Khorne Chaos Lord - Currently has a chainaxe until I find a more badass looking axe to give him a power axe/daemon weapon.
3x 90s era metal oblits - Some were missing arms so I used the Kai gun and Combi-Melta from the Medusa lord as replacements.

I've also done a lot of work on my  Marine Killers, which are looking fantastic! The only issue is I've run out of shoulder pads and backpacks and the bits store I usually buy from (battlewagon bits) seems to have stopped trading in bits. I can only assume this is due to the new trade restrictions, which as an Australian I am extremely unhappy about (seriously... why do I pay almost double the UK?) so if anyone knows anyone who still sells bits to Australia, please let me know. I'll probably just buy from GW for now, but I'd rather not!

Anyway here's a quick and crappy pic from my phone that shows some of what I'm working on.

The middle one actually has a blue plasma cannon type weapon with a dragon head for a muzzle, and they're all based since that pic was taken.

I've also basecoated all of the other things from my previous picture red, and then done the second red layer on all my existing things. I have a hell of a lot of red models now, all ready for their details.

Hooray for progress!

Minor update: Khorne Berserkers now WIP. Got about 6 on the bench including champ, icon, and plasmas. Had some trouble with the red from the airbrush and don't have a matching colour so a few of them might have some out-of-place looking bronze bits. Not as bad as I feared though. No pics yet, will post when I get some.

Pics added.

Looking at them in better light I realise they're much messier jobs than I thought. I really need to find my red paint to do some touch ups. I hope to have the full unit done on Saturday, and barring any unforeseen circumstances this should be a reality.

Also received my bits order from a while back (forgot I actually bought it!) so my Marine-Killers are well underway.

Didn't quite finish the squad but I got heaps done including a few non-zerks. Got a few touch ups, 2 more Berzerkers and then they just need dip and basing. Think I'll do my Terminators next weekend, they'll be a lot easier than these bastards were. I never want to paint another chain weapon again... Not overly happy with them yet, but the plasma pistols came out real nice. Can't wait to paint up some proper plasma guns!

Pics are a bit shoddy but it shows basically where I'm up to. I'll get better pics once they're all finished.

Update at last!

I finally finished my Berzerkers. A few lost arms after being quickshaded so they'll need some fixing. I also need to finish the bases but they're pretty much done. Managed to get a few basic marines done too, including a missile lauuncher, plasma gun, icon bearer and flamer.

Here are some terrible pictures taken with my phone. They're really not this shiny in real life...

Just a tip, but I'd reckonmend waiting until the wash dries before taking pictures, the models will be less likely to glare back at the camera then ;)

Yeah but I'm impatient. That stuff takes a day or two to fully dry, and its still fairly glossy. Noticed I missed a few details on one but they don't look too bad in red so not too much of a problem. I done some experimenting with blood effects on one of my Khorne Berzerkers. Wasn't quite what I was after but looks good nonetheless. I'll post when he dries.

Also the Berzerkers and Obliterators have had some minor work done on their bases. Not big enough to repost, but they look a bit better now I think.

Next up: More Terminators!

I'm making awesome progress but only a few photos to show. I've finished another 3 Terminators, 2 boltgunners, sorcerer and Chaos Lord with axe and combi melta to the point they're ready for quickshading. Also got another melta/axe Terminator and Terminator Lord with lightning claws about 90% done.

Shots of my almost-finished sorcerer are below. This was my first attempt ever at any kind of freehand. I'm pretty happy with the robe and shoulder but the sword didn't turn out well at all. Really pleased with the helm markings though. Leaving his "hat" boltgun metal looked a bit plain. Overall he turned out really well. I have another guy exactly the same but with burning brand instead of a bolt pistol, so this one was a test more than anything. Hopefully the MkII will be more impressive!

Hi all! Long time since my last update. My Quickshade went hard so they're lacking the finishing touches, but they're pretty much done.

Thanks! I had a lot of fun painting something a bit different, it's kinda disappointing I have so many more "standard" models to go. Still, I'm making good progress and this army is slowly nearing completion (or as close to completion as an army ever gets!).

Holy crap, it's more progress! Seriously, I've done more painting this year than I did in the 6 months before new year. Crazy! I'm hoping I can get ALL my chaos done before the baby is due and my warhammer room becomes baby room (did I mention my wife is pregnant? I'm sure I posted it somewhere...). Anyway here's my progress on the DV chosen. No idea what the hell I'll field them as, but the boltgunners will probably replace my power axe champions in my CSM units as bare-bones ACs, and the rest... well... they look cool right?

Boltgunners

You can see my failed attempt at a transfer stuck on the paper here. If anyone knows how to get these damn things to lie flat without folding and creasing and generally looking like shit please tell me your secrets!

Power Fist

I tried filing down some cool mutant claws to add to this guy to make a lightning claw but it didn't work out. Still, he makes a fine addition to the team of power fist toting ACs I already have.

They're looking very good!
From one painter to another, can I suggest you try thinning your paints a little and maybe try using a bit more ink washes... They will add depth and greater colour separation.

Keep going, ultimately the best advice I can give is to keep going. Practice doesn't always make perfect, but it goes a long way to getting there!

Thanks for the feedback! I'm having trouble finding a good paint:water ratio for the Boltgun Metal and Dwarf Bronze(yes my paints are that old). By the end of this I should have mastered it though, either that or run out and buy the new improved versions.

Most of these guys are awaiting their final washes to finish them off, so essentially they're still just basecoated and highlighted.

I'm working on my Abaddon counts-as and a handful of other infantry characters and then I'll lash out and buy some more shades and finish them off.

I've also ruined most of my good brushes which doesn't help.
