I voted to add the scenario and mod/make a unit contests, it will allow those of us with terrible painting skills to get more into the contests :P  :P

Same here, for basically the same reason. I also like conversion competitions, although a lack of a camera has stopped me entering them in the past.

Er, Narric? Brainfart alert I'm afraid - you've got this line:
Quote- The model/unit must be a large Creature or Construct capable of Flight.
in Skymasters and Landterrors...

Also, re the Heavy Infantry category, I'd be a bit hesitant about specifying a base size. Yes, I know we're ultimately a 40k site, but that leans rather explicitly to Terminators, Battlesuits, Wraiths etc for my taste. I'm just thinking of people wanting to enter, say, an Imperial Greatsword unit, Black Orcs or even (=I= WARNING HERESY AHEAD =I= ;) ) non-GW minis/game concepts.

I sympathise here as it's actually quite hard to define heavy infantry without reference to explicit game terminology ("I know it when I see it!" lacks a certain... rigour ;D) - after all, from a certain point of view the whole Space Marine army list (bar scouts) consists of it. Purely my personal view - feel free to kick it out or ignore!

Maybe seperating 40k from Fantasy may help? Then we can go by armour type and Armour save for non-infantry models?

Pilum

Possibly - what are the entry numbers for old "fantasy only" contests though? I know the last few contests haven't had large numbers so I'd be a bit hesitant to fracture things still further. It COULD boost the sightings of non-SF minis, but I don't know how many people have such forces out there. I have 2 fantasy... border garrisons, let's say (I'm hesitant to call them armies!) and in 1/72 I have an Early Imperial Roman army and an English Civil War/30 Years War work-in-progress, but I'd be hesitant to enter those last 2 especially. They're very much gaming-standard models, all the more so considering that they're made up of older kits and the model detail is often not as good as some newer stuff, much like GW's plastics.

Darn you Fantasy and your differences to Sci-fi and 40k!!!! :P

I'll probably have to look up the definition of Heavy and Light Infantry, and then I'll make a ruling based on that. It'll probably be something like:
"for Fantasy Miniatures,  Heavy Infantry are models that wear Heavy Armour or greater, or have an Armour save of 4+ or better without a shield."

Right of the top of my head, thats the best distinction I can think of for Fantasy models :(

Narric

What would people think to Elite Infantry and Core Infantry? I was thinking the elite would be insted of Heavy, whilst Core would replace Light. "Elite" would be for most Specialised units that don't fall into other Contest definitions, whilst Core would pretty much be for 4k Troops and equivalent, so the most common units in a game.

Also I was thinking of a "Tabletop Sports" contest for those who collect Blood Bowl, Dreadball, and whatever else other companies produce which are not strictly "Wargames."

Just putting these ideas here for the community to think about.

gorlak

I think renaming them to Elite and Core might be a good idea, would broaden the categorys a bit and therefore might lure in another contestant or two :P

But I don't know about a sports competition. I have a unpainted BB team that I really should get around to painting - but is there enough contestants you think?

Narric

My thoughts for the Sports Comp was becuase Dreadball is a fairly new thing, and AFAIK people don't consider it (and similar games) for model contests like this. It could potentially draw more to the forum, and in the case of some like yourself, give people a nice incentive to finally paint a Team up fully ;)

I won't "Officially" change the Contest names unless I have more people agreeing. "If it ain't broken don't fix it" :P

Lastly, current votes point to a Scenario Contest, and a Diorama Contest with 3 backers each. behind them, we have another House Rules unit Contest, Armies on Parade, and Scavengercontests with 2 backers each. With the intent of fairness, I'll post up a minor poll to decide which to do for February. I'll do my best to put together the best rules for the Contest decided :)

An Admin or G-Mod is going to kill me one of these days for double posting.....

Thought I'd inform the community that I have finally got my finger out, and contacted a small number of Wargames companies for Prize support for the contests. I've currently contacted, Mantic Games, Anvil Industry, Secret Weapon Miniatures, and Bitz Box. They have technically supported us for last years contests, though i completely dropped the ball on collectin the Bitz Box prizes :P

Is there any particular companies that people would like me to contact? With the turnout for last years contest, we have some examples of the forums work, so we may have a bit of weight now :P

Although, given that you're in Japan now, I suppose that's entirely legit. :shifty:

I voted for poorhammer, due to being poor. I think this allows more creative out put. My issue is the time to pit into something you have to create in x time.

I may put more, but its 345 in the morning.

CoffeeGrunt

Do you mean Bitz Box UK? I know the guy who runs that, order FW through him now and then.

Yes them. I've ordered my stuff needed for the Warlords contest :P

CoffeeGrunt

He has a great Chaos army. Bit too reliant on Spawns, though, but otherwise fun.
