Title: Green Skin Brethran, I have Questions
Post by: Narric on March 08, 2014, 05:51:06 PM
Looking through the Ork Codex, as part of my project for Feral Orks, and I have a few pieces of wargear I have queries about. Mostly usefulness, and whether Feral Orks would even have access to such tools....

Would Feral Orks be able to create/use:
'Utry Syringes
Wreckin' Balls
Tankhammers
Grot Oilers
Grot Riggers
Grot Orderlies
Ammo Runt

And exactly how useful are the following:
Stikkbombs & Stikkbomb Chukkas (most Orks are already I2, is I1 that much of a handicap?)
Bosspole (Way I read it, you risk killing one of your own Orks just for a Re-roll. Is it worth it?)
Ammo Runt (Only one re-roll, per game? Doesn't sound worth the section of page its written on)

Also is there anything you'd expect to see in a Feral Orks army that you wouldn't from a "Space" Orks army?

I'd say that Feral Orks could use all of this stuff however you'd have to redesign the item names and descriptions. Instead of a syringe a feral ork would probably ingest some crazy 'shrooms and it would have the same effect. A wreckin' ball would probably be a massive log or boulder suspended from something.
If there's something to be done then an Ork will usually find a way to get some poor grot to do it; lugging around spare arrows, re-tightening the vines which are holding the chariots together etc. and all Ork civilisations have grots running around.
'Tankhammers' is the only one where it might be a bit harder to come up with a feral alternative but given that they can only be wielded by tankbustas with rokkit launchas you probably wouldn't be using them and if you were you'd have come up with a feral version of the rokkit launcha, whatever that is just attach it to a stick and you've made a tankhammer.

As for the stikkbombs, I've never seen them used, the only things slower than you are power fists/axes etc. and if you have a tide of greenskins (which you should) then a lone sergeant with a fist won't make too much of a dent. For this reason it's also quite a good idea to have bosspoles, if you fail a leadership test then you have to flee, maybe even break from combat and you don't want to do that with orky initiative. You have a green tide so you might as well throw away one ork to keep the rest of them stuck in.
Ammo runts, yeah they probably aren't in most cases however if you were to get a Big Mek with a Kustom Mega Blasta (which gets hot) or your Warboss really wanted to take out a transport with the lone rokkit on his kombi-weapon then maybe it would be worth it. I think people usually take them when they have a few extra points left to spend at the end of constructing their army, given the feral nature of your list you can probably forget about them.

I'm not sure about things which I wouldn't expect to see in a Space Ork army, maybe Big Gunz, lobbas in particular (catapults).

Hope I've been of help.

The old Feral Ork chapter approved codex had them as quite shooty, very into Shootas. They actually had a unit of younger Orks that were BS3 WS3 as these had to go out and hunt for the tribe.

I think all those things seem really feasible besides maybe a Tank Hammer.

I never have a Nob leading a unit without a Bosspole. A few Orks and a Nob are still a dangerous threat, especially as against a lot of things these days the Nob is the only thing that can do real damage and the Boys are just a Nob delivery system. So you really don't want to be failing a LD7 test because of a bit of overwatch and seeing your Nob with Claw run off the table.

Stickbombs are too expensive, Stickbomb Chukkas are a bit of a bargain though really when you think about it, Nob sqauds get some good use out of them in particular.

Your right about Ammo Runts, they suck terribly.

Thats for the responses guys :)

By younger unit I believe you're refering to the "Huntas" squads.

It kinda feels strang seeing Orks at 9pts per model... :P

Overwatch doesn't cause Morale checks, unless you're referring to something else?

Snakebites were also supposed to be really into Weirdboyz, better than average Grots and squigs.  Perhaps a squiggoth variant and make the Weirdboyz into Elite IC's?

Best,
