Title: Lost in Exploration [RP][OOC Thread][Player Sign-up]
Post by: Narric on February 06, 2017, 07:25:40 PM
--Intro--
You are part of a team to use the first intersteller ftl drive with a human crew. You have no idea what to expect in your travels and you'll be far from home. you'll only have your wits, skills, and gear, as well as the resources loaded onto your ship to see you through the dangers and challenges that will face you as you begin humanities first steps into the wider galaxy.

--Initial story--
Earth has passed through a dark age of regression and scientific stagnation brought about by political and corporate war over decades. Various nations and countries have risen and fallen, and its climate wrecked. In this new age brought about by rebelion and the usurption of callous dictators, new world powers have arisen to take control of what is left.

The Blue Union controls a majority of what was once Europe, Russia, Asia, and the Africas, while the Great Republic of the West (GRW) controls all of of the western continent from alaska down to Brazil. Scientific Utopian colonies defend and maintain many regions in the sourthern hemisphere and the luna colonies (SHLC), and owe no alliegence to the Union, or the GRW. Tension caused by differing ideaologies between the Union and the GRW mean earth finds itself in an uneasy peace.

The Blue Union are the ones funding the mission, and hope that in being the first to expand humanity beyond its terrestrial homeworld, it can spark renewal of its peoples, but the GRW have other plans in motion.

--Mission--
The mission is to use the FTL drive to travel to the nearest star system Alpha Centauri A, and deploy a smaller version of the hubble telescope with a stronger transmitter to test and develope intersteller communications technology, while also giving the FTL drive a thorough shake-down.

--International Relations--
The Blue Union are a mostly economically stable union of multiple nations. Each nation maintains traditions, religions, and other individualistic habits. The Union has maintained by use of strict laws alongside sustained education, and resources being shared among the nations where needed. The Blue Union trades peacefully with the SHLC.

The Great Republic of the West imposes a dictatorship rule of law, veering close to becoming a fully militarized nation. The GRW enforces one religion that echos the mentality of superiority over all. The people of the GRW are generally docile and subservient, most working in noxious factories from their mid-teens.
The GRW trades with no other government or colony. If it runs low of resources, it is more likely to attempt to steal from the other factions, regardles of cost or loss of life. The GRw are constantly on lookout for any projects the Union are constructing, and perform attacks and harassment to either destroy halt, or prevent progression.

The Southern Hemisphere and Luna Colonies are a highly scientific driven, semi-autonomous collection of colonies. Each colony is based around the various science centres that scattered the world before the wars, and shares data and information between each colony through the remains of the internet. The SHLC are open to new ideas, but shuns close-mindness especially in the face of provable evidence.

There will be aliens, but not on the crew, unless someone dies and needs to re-roll a character :P

I have a few details to iron out myself, but throwing this out there to see if people are still interested in RP here :3

--Crew--
Mkoll - Commander Jonathan Bradford - Mission Commander
WSBSSTILdIntClWP
343339798

Born in Leeds in the UK, Bradford had a love of flying from an early age. He enrolled in the military, then later in various space programs to fulfil his dream of going further, and faster, than anyone before. He has been second in command on dozens of missions, but this would be his first actual command. As the nerves set in before take-off he found himself wondering if he'd been chosen because he was the best man for the job, or because they didn't want to lose someone experienced on what amounted to a test run.

Narric (DM) - Elicia von Drakoon - Linguist and Cartographer
WSBSSTILdIntClWP
333347887
Before being selected for the FTL Mission, Elicia had been a linguist ensuring that all nations of the BU stayed in good terms, ensuring as much communication as possible wouldn't not break apart the Union. Her skill of knowing multiple languages and track record of results made her a safe pick for the mission, as any alien races encountered would need to be communicated with peacefully.
From a young age she had also had a great deal of interest in old maps, and how borders rose and fell, as well as how the world was ultimately explored. When offered the position for the mission, she requested to receive training in astronomy to ensure there would even be a return trip home.

WP - Noah Miller - Chief Engineer
WSBSSTILdIntClWP
333337897
Noah Miller was born in a small town in Europe. He grew up always wanting to be an engineer. He has spent many years learning how to be an engineer, and has few aspirations beyond working with machines and contributing to a scientific project to help the Blue Union. He is extremely loyal to the Blue Union, and would never even consider acting against its best interest.

Wargamer - Dr Pieter Hale - Medical Doctor
WSBSSTILdIntClWP
333337888
Dr Pieter Hale is a skilled medical officer from the lunar colonies, trained in various medical practices and a lecturer on the effects of extra-planetary environments on the human form. Though not from the BU, he was requested to join due to his expertise, and relished the chance to study the impact of FTL travel on the human form.

Mabbz - Jason Terwich - Security and Demolitions
WSBSSTILdIntClWP
333347887
Jason Terwich (pronounced Tur-wick) grew up in a coastal village in Iceland. Due to the location, the village was often raided by pirates affiliated with the GRW (the GRW denies this). After sleeping through a raid, Jason awoke to find that his brother David had been killed by the pirates.
Following this, Jason developed an obsession with security that bordered on paranoia. He devised dozens of traps, tripwires and alarm systems to defend the village. The defences were successful; the next three raids were fought off with no casualties, and future attacks became less frequent. Despite this, Jason didn't exactly endear himself to the other villagers. His traps were regularly triggered accidentally, sometimes resulting in injury.
Eventually, Jason joined the military and rose through the ranks of homeland security. After moving to one of the Blue Union's capital cities Jason's paranoia lessened, allowing him to sleep comfortably without trying to fortify the whole neighbourhood (although would-be thieves were in for a shock).
When the interstellar project came into being, there were concerns about possible sabotage and security. Jason was picked out as head of security for the mission, with orders to ensure the safety of the ship and it's crew. Jason accepted, decidingthat being a few million miles away from most other humans would be the safest place to be. At least once any onboard insurgents were dealt with, anyway.

Cammerz - Fr Michael Quinlan - Pilot
WSBSSTILdIntClWP
343357777
Mike Quinlan was born in Ireland and as a young man he discovered a great love of flying. He signed up as a combat pilot in the BU military, primarily escorting goods transports between Earth and the Luna Colonies. About a decade into his career Mike's mother died and he decided that his true calling was to be a priest, he immediately left the military and joined a remote seminary.

Several years later, upon deciding to fund this mission to Alpha Centauri, the BU called upon Father Quinlan to return to the pilot-seat and take once more to the stars.

Humanatee - Dr. August 'Gus' Murray - FTL Engine specialist
WSBSSTILdIntClWP
333337987
Born into a wealthy family in Atlanta, young August's intellect and passion for learning quickly defined him amongst a culture of increasing religious fundamentalism. After spending several years completing his mandatory military service as an officer, he used his family's influence and money to defect to the Colonies, where he quickly became one of the most influential scientific minds of our time in the fields of biology and climatology.

His expertise made him the perfect candidate to join the crew as chief science officer, offering his service as another representative from the Colonies.

--Character Creation--
I've been a dumbass with this part of RPs, so I'll be using a less me set of rules. I'll be using elements from Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader to resolve things in this RP, and that will mean a few extra random pieces of gear for each character, with re-rolls if I need to.

You're all human, no exceptions, so you'll have a basic human statline with only a couple changes:
WSBSSTILdIntClWP
333337777
For people who don't have the rogue Trader rulebook to hand, the Personal characteristics are as follows: Leadership, Intelligence, Cool, and Willpower.

You have 3pts to assign to stats of your choice. No removing pts from stats. think of this as the baseline requirements to be an Astronaut in this setting.
Whomever becomes the Mission commander gets a buff to their Leadership stat to 9 by default, and no non-commander character can be higher than Ld9.

PM me character ideas and we'll talk. :3

--Gear--
You're not gonna get access to big guns from the get go. These are fresh from earth Humans, so Lascannons aren't going to be cheap from the corner store.

I've had plenty of experience with regular RPGs such as DnD and Dark Heresy but I've never tried my hand at a forum RP. How does this system work?

As someone that's been playing far too much FTL: Faster Than Light lately as well as reading The All Guardsman Party (Dark Heresy story), count me interested. As tempting as it is to call dibs on Chief Engineer, I'll wait for the rules.

EDIT: Heh, 5 replies in 20 minutes. 2S sure does like it's RPs.

I'm hoping this does turn out like FTL. It'll make combat nice and easy.

"Sir, we're being boarded!"
"Everyone into the medibay! Vent every other room on the ship!"

I turn away from the forum to play Modded Minecraft, and get swarmed!!

As it happens, I was thinking five people would be what I'd need for the crew to start with. Gimme a few minutes, and I'll update the OP with some more info.

Unfortunately I have not played FTL, so any similarities will be purely coincidentle, and likely your fault :P

In his early-mid thirties, Commander Bradford is a wiry man with a genial smile and warm blue eyes. He started balding at an early age and so took the decision to shave his head bald instead, but sports a full beard and moustache. His only tattoo is a rhino on his upper left arm. (not a rugby league reference, honest :P )

Father Michael Quinlan is in his 40s but looking good for it, he's not jacked but would have been described as lean, although the more comfortable years since leaving the military have added a slight layer of padding. His dark brown hair is starting to grey at the temples and he is clean-shaven. Whilst it is almost always concealed, he has a tattoo on his upper left arm corresponding to his old military unit.

I'm not sure if we're being given a uniform for this mission but even if we are he'll wear a formal black shirt with a dog collar underneath it.

Now in his mid-thirties, Dr. Murray still manages to stay in impressive physical shape for a man who spends the majority of his waking hours pouring over research texts and scientific data in his makeshift lab at the launch site. He is tall, with blue eyes and blonde hair, clearly a man born of generations of genetic tailoring that was so common during the darker years of his birthplace. In the rare instances when he ventures out into public eye, he dresses in the formal attire of a southern gentleman for official events, but prefers his Colonial lab coat when on the job.

Although he is not the sort of man to believe that the Blue Union is a nation of prejudice or hate, even towards people of their enemy state, nobody can miss the outline of a handgun strapped to his hip underneath his white and gold laboratory uniform. It is a model not seen in the Union, it was a gift from his late grandfather and Dr. Murray had to have many strings pulled simply to allow it to remain with him in his travels.

Jason Terwich is 42, has pale skin from not getting much sun and a wiry physique. Despite appearances as a shut in, he has a surprising turn of speed due to his career in demolitions. He often forgets to shave or comb his blonde hair, leaving him with a slightly unkempt look. He always carries a scanner of his own design for checking for traps, a bulky-looking pistol that he has warned people never to try to use, and a smoke grenade that his superiors have long since given up on trying to make him leave at home.

Pieter Hale is a man in his early thirties, with blond hair, blue eyes and a slight Russian accent. He wears glasses not because he needs them, but because he thinks it's something academics should wear. If his hair is not kept cropped short, it quickly grows out of control and seemingly takes on a life of its own, defying combs and styling gel to maintain a naturally frazzled look. As such, Pieter often looks like he's been working with unsafe electrical equipment. Under his shirt, he has distinctive birthmarks across his chest and back, though he rarely reveals them.

Finally go this somewhat presentable.

I present the BUSA Hammond :3

Exterior hull from above.

Interior sections, coloured by function. key will be made tomorrow. the lime-green is the bridge btw.

Still WIP, but I'd estimate this ship to be roughly 200m at least from tip of bridge the the rear engines.
Any comments and additions are welcome :3

BUSA? Obviously Blue Union, maybe followed by Ship but then I'm stuck.

Blue Union Space Association.

The dome is astrometrics. The FTL drive system is nestled within Engineering near the back. Engineering is darker Green and the drive if Yellow.

I'm honestly still confused on the security bit. Why is it so big and what purpose does it serve in space?
Title: Re: Lost in Exploration [RP][OOC Thread][Player Sign-up]
Post by: Mabbz on February 24, 2017, 11:03:04 AM
Well, Narric may have some other ideas, but I assume it's mostly it's just a room full of security monitors, internal sensors and various other bits of my equipment. It might also have a side room to act as the brig, and be one of the few places onboard where all the doors on the ship can be remotely sealed. Also off limits to the enitre crew except Jason, unless you want to try disarming your way though a bunch of (mostly non-lethal) traps and tripmines and such.

Are forcefields a thing in this setting? Can I activate security fields to hamper intruder movement?
Title: Re: Lost in Exploration [RP][OOC Thread][Player Sign-up]
Post by: Narric on February 24, 2017, 11:48:34 AM
The only field technology is part of the FTL engine. It can't be applied as a forcefield within crew areas. Best you can do is prevent a beam from firing from the bridge to the engines as it could dissipate the energy (into the hull perpendicular to the beam where it hits the field if it happens inside).

Locking down entry ways (which I should include along with a scale humanoid) will prevent most creatures free roam of the ship, but do keep in mind there will be ventilation.

Security is also where emergency crew weaponry will be found. All crew have basic handgun training. Reminder that you will not find land raider rending gatling guns or lascannons. Think Firefly/Serenity for level of weapons available.

Post by: Wargamer on February 24, 2017, 11:52:51 AM
I'd imagine there's also failsafes and redundancies built in. This is a ship that can't expect help if something goes wrong, so it's likely there's a fair bit of overdesign taking place.
Title: Re: Lost in Exploration [RP][OOC Thread][Player Sign-up]
Post by: Humanatee on February 24, 2017, 11:53:21 AM
Ok so its also an armory. I was thinking a monitoring room couldn't possibly need to be so big haha. I'm guessing in this setting there are other ships in the sky to worry about.

Post by: Cammerz on February 24, 2017, 12:03:57 PM
There'll be other ships around Earth certainly but we aren't expecting anything further afield. We're the first humans to ever venture out like this.

On that note, are there any ship weapons?
Title: Re: Lost in Exploration [RP][OOC Thread][Player Sign-up]
Post by: Narric on February 24, 2017, 12:13:37 PM
On that note, are there any ship weapons?
Mass Driver turrets peppered across the top and bottom of hull. Automated but require activation, but manual control can be assumed if needed, or if the autotracking goes down. Each turret has two barrels which fire alternately, equating to roughly two shots per second. They will overheat if forced to sustain fire.

The turrets aren't designed for combat, only defense against slow moving debris. The ship however does have a significant amount of maneuverability for its size.

So this ship is pretty advanced for its time then, but not alone got it. Are there known warships in the solar system?

Also, I'm guessing the ship will have more crew once the testing phase ends. It does sound big for such a small team.

And last question. Gravity?

No known. For the BU, almost all scientific research was funneled into this project. While the populace under the BU haven't had many issues beyond GRW raids and skirmishes, publically available technology hasn't advanced in pace with the Hammond's development.

Also, I'm guessing the ship will have more crew once the testing phase ends. It does sound big for such a small team.
It would likely become a forerunner ship, traveling to each new potential star system ahead of colony ships. More being built over time. The main limitation for the FTL drive being a compound that is very hard to synthesis in earth-like gravity (57% on Earth, and has a 39% yeild in Luna-like gravity). Thankfully a suitably sized chunk was found in the asteroid belt of the solar system, along with a number of compounds harvested for the ships hull.

And last question. Gravity?
Pick any method of gravity generation that has minimal side affects and doesn't require the ship spinning on an axis.
They have the technology but there are far too many ways in sci-fi to just pick one :P

Short answer is gravity plating. Just hope they don't overload.

I'm guessing the kitchen/dining room are all part of the meeting room section? I'm drawing comparisons with Serenity here.

Between the two crew quarters. The Bridge and Meeting room will have basic water dispensers, the latter having heatplates for pre-prepared meals. The ship was designed to have a long service, and need minimal retrofitting for its future post-mission.

Just a note, but the FTL drive room is limited access to the Specialist, Engineer, Commander, and Security.
Engineering is limited access to the Engineer, Commander, and Security. Can be made open access from inside and by security override.
Individual crew compartments are accessible only by the assigned crewman, while the Sec-Off can override with Commanders' approval.
Medical is open access, though most equipment and chemicals will be secured for the Doctors' discretion.
Bridge, Meeting Room and Astrometrics is open access.

In character introductions don't need to be long. The plot will be convenient once everyone has had a turn :3

Plot progression :P

Sorry It took a while. Coursework deadlines are creeping up on me.

As a note, Jonathan wanted the crew to gather personal items, but the alert meant they didn't have time for that.

The bridge is fairly spacious, but the launch chairs are essentially bucket seats in a recessed section of the floor. The Commanders seat is t the front and has access to all the same telemetry data as the pilot, as well as access to the defense turrets if needed.

Next post will be in a few days and will include the launch and the FTL jump, so heads up for that.

Fun fact!
"I C B M" is also what a person says if they see one flying towards them.

I'm sorry but maybe I'm missing something from that last post, but did the GRW just use a giant skull-faced doomsday satellite to blow up the moon? That's what it looks like you wrote but I'm just trying to be sure haha.

Yep. They've been biding their time, collecting similar resources as the BU, however they're simple minded wanting to just take over the world and impose their philosophy and will.

What they don't have is the FTL tech, mainly because they were focusing on their doomsday weapon. It would take them at least a few years to develop it themselves now, mainly because their over the top declaration of war is going to destroy much of the blueprints and scientific knowhow to do it. That and without the moon, Earth's orbit, weather, and potentially many other things are going to go to hell in a hand basket.

Oh, and keep in mind there was a sizable human population on the moon.

You maniac! You blew it up!

So... How badly was the moon blown up? Large fragments that could coalesce back into a roughly moon sized object (still killing everyone on the moon, but hopefully not completely wrecking the earth)? Or fragments small enough that the earth will eventually get a ring, like saturn (practically guaranteeing the end of civilisation)?

Also, at the risk of sounding suicidal, how catastrophic would it be if we pointed our ship at the GRW and activated the FTL drive? Or possibly ramming their doomsday weapon, or reconfiguring our warp field to fire our mass driver shots at lightspeed? Or any other technobabble method of spectacularly contributing to the war?

The moon has been blasted into some pretty large chunks. However, roughly a quarter of its solid mass, mainly from the point of impact, has been turned to dust ranging from football sizes chunks to about the size of Ireland. It may reform over time, but for now the more pressing issue is the debris falling to earth which call become a serious issue to sustained life on the planet.

The GRW vessel is at least eight times the size of the Hammond. It would be like a Piranha ramming a Land Raider. There are also defence weapons that would probably turn the ship into swiss cheese before you even got close enough to see in through any windows. Then there is the fact they could charge the weapon and fire it directly at you, which is their current plan.

The Hammond can maneuver an Asteroid field if needed, but it cannot dogfight or perform metal twisting turns and course corrections, and momentum is a thing that exists, so the crew would be thrown around inside.

Activating the FTL drive while flying straight at the GRW Vessel is also a really bad idea. The FTL Drive tunnels through and bends space/time. Think of it as somewhere in between the main engine of the Event Horizon (in movie of same name) and a Stargate (without the physical permenant gate part). To a point, you'd drag the GRW vessel with you, which would disrupt the field keeping the Hammond safe, and effectively blow you both up.

I'm not certain what I'm supposed to be doing here. I guess Noah should get to the engine room? But... Does he need to, like, turn on the FTL with a big red button or something? Do I need to make a Tech-use Test to coax out a machine spirit?

Will do a DM post once I'm back home tonight.

Once you escape the Solar System, the GRW are unlikely to be a threat.

Unless the death star can warp as well lol

I'm legit uncertain what my character could or should be doing right now.

Well without some manual safeguards being disengaged, the FTL drive won't work. The safeguards were implemented because the developers thought the crew would have time from launch to reaching beyond Luna orbit to do final calibrations in a timely manner, while also ensuring the drives couldn't be activated without proper intent in a situation like you're in now.

As it stands now, you need the drive and calibrations will have to be done on the fly where needed. Not impossible, but it does have a high probability of being hazardous in an unpredictable fashion. You could punch a whole into an alternate universe, shred the ship apart at the atomic level, or simply just blink yourself to the other side of the planet (which would have you hovering right over GRW controlled landmass, jsyk ;))
