Hi all! This isn't really a battle report, but more of an overview of my games on the weekend. This is very much for my own reference as much as for you guys to read, so if it seems like it's incomplete (it's all in my head somewhere!) please let me know and I'll elaborate. I'm a bit scatterbrained at the moment!

Anyway, I had a few friends over for some friendly 2k point games on the weekend. Two of my friends are very beginner, so their lists generally aren't too competitive. That's fine by me, I like running fun lists and having newer players it kinda brings us on par. Then there's the competitive guy. The guy I've posted about numerous times in some way or another. Most pleasant chap in the world but sometimes his lists are just mean. I knew I'd have to at least go semi-competitive so I thought I'd try something new.

My list looked like this:
Chaos Space Marines

  • Abaddon
  • Chaos Lord: Mark of Khorne, Axe of Blind Fury, Aura(5++)
  • Sorcerer: Burning Brand, lvl2, Aura (5++)
  • Terminators x3: Axe and combi melta x2, Champ: Fist and combi bolter
  • Chaos Space Marines x10: 2x Melta, Champ: Power Axe
  • Chaos Space Marines x10: 2x Plasma, Mark of Slaanesh, Icon of Excess, Champ: Plasma Pistol, Lightning Claw
  • Cultists x20: 8x Autogun, Heavy Stubber, Flamer, Champ: Shotgun
  • Khorne Berserkers x10: 2x Plasma Pistol, Icon of Khorne (whatever that's called), Champ: Power Sword, Plasma Pistol
  • Obliterators x3
  • Obliterators x3
  • Havocs x5: 3x Lascannon

Lets get to gaming!

Game 1: vs Orks/Necron
Orkcrons

  • Warboss: Twinlinked Big Shoota (is this allowed?), Power Klaw, 4+
  • Nobz x10 (I think...): Slugga and choppas, 4+, Mad doc, Looted Wagon
  • Boyz x20 (or x30, not sure...): Shootas, Rokkit, Big Shoota
  • Gretchin x10: Runtherd: Grabba stick and squig, Trukk
  • Biker boyz x3
  • Necron Overlord: Scarabs, weave, res orb
  • Necron Lord: Scarabs and some other stuff
  • Warriors x14
  • Warriors x14
  • Immortals x5: Telsla
  • Scarabs x7is
  • Doomsday Arc

Game Scenario: Dawn of War deployment on 4x4 table. Crusade with 4 objectives.
Warlord Traits: Abaddon - Black Crusader, Warboss - Scoring, Overlord - Scoring
Psychic Powers: Hallucination and something else. Can't remember.

DEPLOYMENT PIC GOES HERE

I get first turn. Everything shuffles forwards a bit except for my havocs and the guys camping the objective (which gives skyfire. Yay...) and my havocs shave a hullpoint off the Doomsday Arc. With the terminators and oblits in reserves my turn is over.

Orks all move forwards to claim the objective in the crater (trapped, but did no damage all game) and Necrons all swarmed theirs (nothing of note). Shooting killed off most of my Cultists but thanks to the attached Lord they stay put. Nobz and gretchin disembark and move forwards, putting some wounds on the Berserkers and killing two. Nobz charge the Berserkers and overwatch kills one. Close combat sees 5 more Nobz go down and 3 Zerks bite the dust. I solidly win combat and run down the Nobz and warboss.

Oblits come in (both units) and occupy the gap behind the Orks. Flames take out the scarabs completely, putting the hurt on the Warriors escorting the Overlord and plasma takes another 5 down. Lascannons hit the Arc, immobilising it. Massed boltgun fire kills the trukk, despite plasma doing nothing and Hallucination stops the Ork mob from shooting, assaulting or running! Khorne lord and remaining cultist charge the gretchin. I roll a 6 for extra attacks and hit and wound with all of them.

Necrons fire everything they have on both oblit squads, killing one from each. Orks derp around doing nothing and the doomsday arc fails to hit my juicy Slaanesh marines.

Abaddon and co come in just in front of the immortals. Oblits explode the arc, now with its feeble AV11 and Assault Cannon the boyz, taking about 6 out. Lascannon kills some immortals and the terminators finish them off. Berserkers and Slaanesh Marines finish off the remaining boyz and claim the middle 2 objectives

Mass Necron fire kills all the terminators and puts 2 wounds on Abaddon. The Looted wagon moves up to the Havocs and lets rip with big shootas and a skorcha. 3 go down.

Obliterators wipe out a bunch of Necrons but most get up. Most of my stuff stays put, since I hold 3 objectives. Axe lord runs solo towards the Overlord's blob but fails his charge and Abaddon charges the other blob. A Challenge is issued, Mindshackle ensues and no wounds are done by anyone (how the hell did that happen?!). At this point my opponent concedes defeat

Score:
Chaos - 3 objectives (9pts), Slay the Warlord, First Blood, Linebreaker. Total: 12pts
Necrorks - 1 objective. Total: 3pts

Honestly I knew I'd probably win from the start. He's a very inexperienced player with a list thrown together out of models he has lying around. He's more of a painter than a player (his stuff is amazing!) and has about 5 small 1000ish pt armies, so this really wasn't his day. The pivotal point for me was when the oblits came in from behind. Completely messed up his backfield and he was really relying on that Arc. Abaddon and friends were largely useless and not worth their points (as you'll see, this becomes a trend) whereas the axe murdering psychopath done really well, routing the Nobz/Warboss and mopping up some gretchin along the way.

Anyway that's game 1 down. 2 more to go!

Game 2: vs Grey Knights
Grey Knights

  • Mordrak: 5x Ghost Knights, Banner
  • Coteaz
  • Inquisitor Lord: 2x Daemon Blade s
  • Henchmen: 5x Death Cult Assassins, Razorback: Heavy Bolters, Psybolt Ammo
  • Henchmen: 5x Death Cult Assassins, Razorback: Heavy Bolters, Psybolt Ammo
  • Grey Knights x10: Swords, 2x Pycannon, Psybolt ammo
  • Grey Knights x10: Swords, 2x Pycannon, Psybolt ammo
  • Dreadnaught: 2x Twinlinked Autocannon, Psybolt ammo
  • Dreadnaught: 2x Twinlinked Autocannon, Psybolt ammo
  • Nemesis Dreadknight: 2x Doomfist, Heavy Incinerator
  • Nemesis Dreadknight: 2x Doomfist, Heavy Incinerator
  • Aegis Defence line: Quadgun
  • Aegis Defence line: Quadgun

Game Scenario: Dawn of war deployment on a 3x6 table. Big guns never tire.

DEPLOYMENT PIC GOES HERE.

I don't remember where the objectives are. It largely doesn't matter as this game turns into a bloodbath real fast.

The setup was a huge disadvantage for me. We only had a 6" deep deployment zone and there was no line-of-sight blocking cover except the bastion and statue, and they were in bad spots. His defence line covered most of his deployment zone, and a 10-man GK unit manned each quadgun. There was a small gap in the line where the Razorbacks sat, and both dreadnaughts were on his left (my right) flank. Mordrak and the Dreadknights sit in reserves.

I deploy in a thin line. From left to right I had: Slaanesh Marines, Melta Marines, Berserkers with Sorcerer, Havocs. Cultists made a line in front of my army (I'll make my own cover with the corpses of my loyal followers!) and axe-murderer is attached for fearlessness. Oblits and Abbadon sit in reserves.

Turn 1 sees me shuffle forwards and strip 2 hullpoints off a dread (so close)

His turn 1 sees Mordy drop in next to my Slaaneshi marines and about 17 cultists drop to various shooting. All havocs bar 1 are killed as well.

I shuffle my two CSM squads around Mordrak and run my axe lord towards him. Oblits both come in and sit between the dreadnaughts and razorbacks. Abaddon mishaps and gets placed in the furthest possible corner from anything useful. My shooting phase sees two dreads go down and most of the ghost knights die. I also wound Mordrak, and more ghosts come to play (joy). My Axe lord charges in and issues a challenge. Mordrak declines and I proceed to wipe out everything except the Grand Master, but die also.

Dreadknights come in, one deepstrikes and one outflanks (due to some rule or another). Inquisitor disembarks and heads towards the oblits. The midfield DK gets prescience cast on him and then fails to do anything useful. Flanking DK flames my lone lascannon havoc, who survives! Shooting sees a handful of most things die, but nothing crippling.

I unleash hell on the GK manning the quadgun with oblits, killing about 6. The CSM bring down Mordrak, who survived far more bolter rounds than he has any right to. Berserkers shoot a wound of the middle DK and the lascannon does nothing. Abaddon and co run up the field towards the left quadgun, but are still well out of assault range. Berserkers charge the Dreadknight and I instantly regret it. It saves all its wounds and beats down 3 in return.

Coteaz gets out of his Razorback and casts prescience on the DK in assault, and the Inquisitor casts it on the other DK. Flames see my melta squad reduced to 4, and then the right side GKs finish them off with Psycannons and Quadguns. The other quadgun squad destroys terminators so now Abaddon is on his lonesome. Assault sees both units of obliterators vanish and the Berserkers whittled down some more. My numbers are running thin!

Abaddon and the Slaaneshi squad move in to kill the left quadgun team (who are on an objective. I remember now!) Cover saves are made and Abby flunks his assault roll. Khorne Berserkers are finally wiped out, and the no-longer-fearless Sorcerer is run down.

Not sure what happened this turn, but Abaddon is all that's left after the dust settles. We roll to continue the game (please continue! I can assault now!) but it ends.

Score:
Chaos – Linebreaker, 2x heavy support destroyed: 3pts
Grey Knights: Linebreaker, 3x heavy support destroyed, 1x objective: 7pts

I had no chance. Soon as I saw the terrain setup I knew it was good game. I'm thinking now that I should have had my oblits on the field for turn 1 just to pump out an extra 6 lascannon shots. I was too ambitious with deepstriking them too, putting them in harms way. Abaddon and friends were again useless, and the axe-lord collected his fair share of skulls for Khorne. I really think against this particular player I need to make a fully competitive list instead of using things I think will be cool. Time to buy some Helldrakes and Noise Marines I think.

Game 3: vs Blood Angels
 Blood Angels

  • Librarian: Terminator Armour, Force Sword, Storm Shield
  • Furioso Librarian
  • Death Company Dreadnaught: Blood Fists, Melta, Stormbolter
  • Death Company Dreadnaught: Blood Fists, Melta, Stormbolter
  • Tactical Marines x10: Missile Launcher, Flamer
  • Tactical Marines x10: Missile Launcher, Flamer
  • Sanguinary Priests x2: 1x Terminator Armour
  • Death Company x10: Jump Packs, 2x Thunder Hammers
  • Assault Terminators x10: Hammer and Shield
  • Stormraven: Twinlinked Plasma Cannon, Twinlinked Multi Melta, Hurricane Bolters
  • Stormraven: Twinlinked Plasma Cannon, Twinlinked Multi Melta, Hurricane Bolters

Game Scenario: Dawn of war deployment on a 4x4 table. Emperor's Will (1 objective each).
Warlord Traits: Abaddon - Black Crusader, Librarian: Something generic and useless
Powers: Sorcerer – Invisibility and Psychic Shriek, Furioso – Blood Lance and Wings of Sanguinius, Librarian - Prescience

The field was largely the same as game 1, with me down the bottom this time. A minor change to terrain saw a ruined concrete Aquila provide cover to the tactical squad without a priest.

He deployed very symmetrically. Furioso in the middle with a Death Company Dread to either side, tactical squads in either corner with a priest attached to the objective holders. Jump pack troops were deployed slightly behind the dreads.

I made a wall of bodies, putting oblits and havocs on opposite hills and kept the cultists hidden behind a hill on an objective.

He got first turn and moved forward. Nothing died to shooting.

I get invisibility off on my berserkers and all the marines move forwards. Lascannon fire kills the Furioso and plasma kills most of the objective holding tactical squad.

His left side DCD charges the melta marines (now with attached axe murderer) and the resulting combat has 3 marines turned into goo and 2 hull points shaved off by crazy-axe. The Death Company with jump packs attempt a charge on the Slaaneshi marines but fails.

Abaddon comes in on the enemy's backfield. Yay! Berserkers move up the midfield towards the Aquila marines but roll poorly for movement. Combi-melta kills the DCD that's not in combat and Oblits and havocs manage to kill all the remaining objective holders until only the priest remains. More marines fall to the remaining Dread and it survives the hail of axe strikes.

All his reserves come in. Terminators mishap so I put them in the far corner near the Aquila. Ravens come in at angles and proceed to do absolutely nothing to Abaddon, but all the Chaos Terminators evaporate. A stray missile kills the havocs, leaving only one (now known as the "lone cannoneer" for his tendancy to be the last one surviving). In assault the Dread finally goes down, and the jump infantry makes in with the Slaaneshis, only to do precisely nothing and lose 2 in return.

Abaddon and all available troops head towards the Terminators and tactical marines. Invisibility is cast on the Cultists and they go to ground. Obliterators and Havoc shoot at the Ravens to no effect. In assault my Slaanesh champion challenges his Death Company sarge, but neither inflict wounds. My marines kill his hammers and combat is locked for another turn. Abaddon makes it to combat with the Tactical marines and challenges the sergeant. He accepts, Abaddon wins and the whole squad falls back off the table.

Stormravens zoom up the field and unleash all they have on the cultists. About 12 die, and they manage to pass their leadership. The Death Company are wiped out by a particularly good round of fighting by the Slaanesh Marines, who consolidate towards the objective. Terminators charge Abaddon, wisely not issuing a challenge. Although 3 die to the Despoiler's Daemon sword the resulting hammering pulps the Black Crusader and nets my opponent Slay the Warlord.

Berserkers run up the field with the now solo axe murderer and the Slaanesh squad moves ever closer to the objective. Meltas double back towards my objective but roll badly for movement (what the hell is wrong with me moving towards objectives!?). Again Obliterators fail to bring down the Ravens, but shooting from the berserkers puts a wound on the Librarian. The enraged lunatics sprint an impressive 10" to charge the Terminators and the champion challenges the Librarian. The champ loses, but the rest of the Termies go down in a rain of axe swings. The Librarian breaks from combat and runs off the table, and the berserkers consolidate towards the objective.

The flyers enter hover mode. Stormraven 1 kills the remaining cultists and Stormraven 2 makes short work of the obliterators, leaving 1 alive (damn scattered blast!). Neither of us hold an objective now.

Everything I have moves towards his lone priest. If that dies, I win regardless! Turns out this guy is a bit of an Ahnold and is immune to bullets and lasers. I fail my charge rolls with my berserkers (needed a 12" to be fair) and on that the game ends.

Score
Chaos – Slay the Warlord, Linebreaker, First Blood: 3pts
Blood Angels: Slay the Warlord: 1pt

This was fun! Lots of killing and Abaddon's unit (and Abaddon) actually done something! Not really a lot to say about this game. Should have kept my Meltas back to replace the Cultists but I didn't think the Berserkers would handle the Terminators so well.

Anyway thanks for looking, and as always comments and criticism are welcome!

Arguleon-veq

Some nice games against some very different lists.

The second game was always going to be pretty tough mainly because he was making use of the two force org charts, I dont think 2,000 points is enough to really use 2 despite the rules. Id only ever play it like that at 3k+.

I think of your list the only real keepers are those oblits, if your going for a competative build I think most other things can be chopped and changed.
X-Wing Tournaments;
1st - 38
11th - 33

Fhanados

Yeah the second game was tough. I haven't won a game against that guy for about 12 months, but I usually make it tough on him!

As for my list, there will be some significant changes for next time. I'm trying to avoid the conventional "Noise Marines, Baledrake, Baledrake, Victory!" list, mainly because I like to try my own thing, but also because I have neither Noise Marines or Helldrakes.
Abaddon and friends are out. They're simply too many points and have no effective delivery system. I might run terminators at some point, but without the 250+pts combat monster that never makes it to assault.
Lascannon Havocs are out. They're not terrible (despite not really doing much), but I've found autocannons sitting on a quadgun more bang for buck. Just gotta buy me some autocannons now!
Berserkers done pretty well for themselves except in game 2, and it's game 2 that I really wanted to shine. Probably will drop them to free up points for something less stabby and more shooty.
Cultists I might keep. No idea what they're good for, but 20 cheap scoring bodies running round getting shot at isn't too bad. Their loadout is aweful, but hey that's what I've got and I'm a stickler for WYSIWYG in my own armies.
Oblits are here to stay. I've even painted some!
Melta Marines are staying, although will probably put them in a Rhino. I have another squad with the same loadout and usually field both with pretty decent success. I can swap the Meltas for Plasma too if that's better.
Slaanesh Marines will probably stay and get more gear. I know they're expensive but they represent the veteran elite of my army and are dedicated marine killers. Also the models are really really cool, the most fun I've had converting since my Fallen Angel squad (which have fallen by the wayside since Chosen lost infiltrate).
Axe lord was amazing but he needs a delivery system. I now understand why people go the juggernaught and spawn combo. This isn't really possible for me, so maybe he can go in a 9 man CSM squad in a Rhino with a flamer.
Burning Brand Sorcerer needs a Disk of Tzeentch or Steed of Slaanesh to get him mobile. Steed would be good then I could flank my Slaanesh Marines and maybe even field my Fallen!

Really I don't know. I'll ponder and post something in the army lists section.

BigToof

Cool to see that you're doing well with your CSM!
Sorry it's taken me a while to reply, but I like what I see.

Karma'd for your keen writeup.

Wow thanks! I didn't expect karma for this at all, so that's a nice surprise!

I'm currently going on a painting spree, so chances are my next battle wont be for a while and with my penchant for using as many painted models as possible in my lists you might see a few questionable choices until I've got the lot done.

I've almost got all the bitz I need for my marine-killers. I just need shoulder pads and they're good to go! Really looking forwards to painting them up and fielding them in their full kit and Rhino.
